Yeah most stores I've been to (Wal-Mart, Taret, Best Buy) are all sold out. That price drop is really moving units.

I give it two months after the 60GB model is sold out for Sony to then reduce their sole 80GB version down by $100.

Unless you have a time machine, you don't know what they'll price the 80GB model at once the 60GB stock has run out. They won't talk more about it now because they want to sell what they have now rather than admit that you may get a better bargain in 3 months.
If people still don't understand that, I give up. |

I read somewhere that they were speaking to someone at Sony and they stated that the price cut on the 60 GB PS3 is to clear out their current stockpile of the 60 GB, and once they are gone, they are gone. Then the 80 GB version at $599 will be the only option and the 60 GB will be discontinued. I am trying to find the link and then post it once I find it.

I think that it will have to. Sony has to realize that the $599 price point was the reason no one was buying. Just because you add 20 GB of drive space and a game, the price is still above the price point consumers are willing to spend. If I couldn't afford it, or want to buy is at $599 before, what makes you think I will pay that price for 20 GB more and Motorstorm, generally speaking of course.

i really do not understand why people are complaining about something that is going to happen months from now.
Do you think Sony is stupid enough not to realize that the people are buying because the price went down to $499????? So yes... in a few months there will be no more 60 gig systems. Well guess what, the 80 gig/motorstorm edition is a LIMITED EDITION. Their 80 gig system probably has the same production cost within $20 from the 60 gig. At that point they will MOST LIKELY exhaust the 80 gig LE edition and release it by itself at $499. So now Sony just reduced their 80 gig to $499 for the holidays. They look good. systems will sell. at almost no extra cost........ If you can't wait for this..... then buy the 60 gig.... otherwise don't complain amd sit tight and get an 80 gig system for the holidays for $499.... |

It's a marketing thing as well as achieving economies of scale. I think $499 definitely broke through some psychological barriers with many people. Couple that with the 5 movies BDA promotion + (free sixaxis or free bluetooth remote or whatever) and they are flying off the shelves now! It was enough to make me jump this week - and I have NEVER been a console gamer (strictly PC). Sony isn't stupid. They'll see the results of this sale and maneuvre accordingly. For a long time, Sony has been one of the higher priced brands in many product lines. Sometimes justified by better quality or features, and sometimes not. But their name brand recognition is worth a lot, and they are reluctant to drop prices too fast because it causes consumers to perceive it as cheap or low quality. In comparison, I think what Toshiba has done with their HD DVD prices gives me the impression that their products are not worth much and that they are desperate and almost giving them away. |

There could be a possible price drop on the 80gig but it won't be any time soon after it's release. I work at a Wal-Mart and we can't keep the 60 gig's in stock for very long. Last I saw we only had one left. Very good move on Sony's part, and there are the 5 free BD's as well. After seeing E3 on G4tv I can only imagine how well they could do this holiday season.

I am just happy I have a 60G one - if and when needed, I will just upgrade my drive space. Personally I would rather have my current one w/emotion instead of software emu. I still have lots of PS2 games I play on the PS3. BUT - I hope they do the right marketing things to keep them competitive, so they dont start losing all their 3rd party exclusives and whatever else happens w/bad business decisions. I do agree w/others who think they have something up their sleeves for the holidays though. They have something coming, I can feel it. a little tidbit at this following link

To re-cap.... Killzone will never live up to the trailer.. All that new technology in the PS3 is a reliability concern compared to the proven technology used in our "next" gen console We don't think the PS3 will make that much of a difference for blu-ray - people only buy it for games.. No upscaling is possible - they can't do that. The price drop isn't a price drop. yada yada yada.. ALL OF THEM HAVE BEEN WRONG. .. and the list is as long as my arm. Aren't people getting a little tired of being wrong all the time. I'd have a little more respect for the opinions of those that fessed up to how many times they have been rather than moving on to the next opportunity to be..wrong again. Either some people are really slow to evaluate the historical evidence in front of them or they have another agenda. Ok folks of all the dozens of FUD topics over the last year how many have actually turned out to be true. What's the percentage that have been wrong? And how many have you participated in it? How about adjusting your reasoning and ethics to the empirical evidence in front of you. And no that's to shut people down but rather to wake them up. Again welcome xmositox for using your capacity to think. How refreshing. |
