Default Apocalypto Blu-ray review

I have this blue ray dvd and I played it on my playstation 3. I have a sony HD-TV. My family couldn't believe the clear crisp colors. the picture was so clear we felt like we were right in the jungle! the sound is fantastic (I played thru my surround sound). there are subtitles, but you don't spend alot of time reading, you can still focus on the movie. My 86 year old mother loved it! Mel you came through once again!!!

I was interested in seeing this on Blu-ray, but I just can't bring myself to buy it with that huge grammatical error on the cover. It says:

"No one can outrun 'their' destiny."

It should say:

"No one can outrun 'his' destiny."

Remember high school English... singular pronouns need singular verbs. I know it's nitpicking, but it bugs me, and it's hard to believe there are thousands of covers out there without basic grammar checking.

I rented this one from Netflix, and also found it amazing on Blu. A thoroughly entertaining flick.

i cant agree more. one of my roomates was freaking out when we watched it. the crisp picture, sound, shaky camera, and native langauge made it seem like you were really there and it was a documentary rather than cinema production.

crazy movie, puts a different perspective on life.

duuude.

In English, you have to match the verb, so you have two choices:

1. Use 'his', it's considered generic with an indefinite pronoun.
2. Use 'his or her', which might sound funny in this case.

Or, if it was specifically a woman, then you'd use 'her', I guess. Such as the 'Bionic Women'...

'Their' just isn't an option. You could be onto something, though, perhaps a feminist wrote the cover and is offended by the conventions of English.

Hhhmmm, didn't think of the feminist angle but Merriam-Webster would support Mel....

That does it. I'm not going to watch the movie for the same reason, Olarmy96.

Actually, "their" is acceptable because it is "their" right to put whatever they want on the cover. What would REALLY piss me off is if they put, "No one can escape they're destiny." Then I'd agree it's just silly.

Academically speaking, there is a huge difference between what is taught as "proper English" and what is culturally acceptable. I've been a journalist and author for over 15 years, and the old rules just don't apply anymore. Media and marketing companies have thrown out the AP Stylebook--you gotta write the way your audience speaks, because we're not channeling Hemingway here. It might not be "correct", but who says you have to follow all the rules all the time? I mean, who the hell wrote those rules, anyhow?

I before E, ya'll!

^^ Indeed, grammar rules are archaic and cling to norms that are long past their utility. Why don't we use the "u" in honor and color (for example) any more? Why is the last letter of the alphabet "zee" and not "zed"? And to all purists out there, why are there so many foreign words in the English lexicon... cummerbund, bungalow, blitzkrieg, jungle, etc.?

My $0.02 musings!!

Welcome JimMayor007 and olarmy97... Glad y'all are on the blu side...
This site has a little section for movie reviews... Apocalypto (also one of my favs) has several good reviews. Check out:

You can add your endorsement as well!

Most of those are still in use in Canada.

Colour, honour, zed - all the norm.

Also centre instead of center - but we stray off topic...

Actually, "No one can outrun 'their' destiny" is correct English. To quote the Shorter Oxford English dictionary:

"In relation to a singular noun or pronoun of undetermined gender: his or her. (Considered erron[eous] by some.)"

Correct English *does* use "u" in honour and colour, and does pronounce the 26th letter of the alphabet as "zed". Please don't take the American bastardisation of the English language as being correct! ;-)

(And before anyone asks, yes, I was born in England, though I live in Canada now.)

It's not correct. Because English doesn't have indefinite possessive pronouns, some people try to take a short cut. If you match 'No one' with their, then you're considering it plural. So, do you say "No one see their destiny?"

That sounds awful. Give them an inch and they take a mile...

Default Grammar

In my state we no longer teach grammar in this fashion. Frankly, most people just do not care. Frankly, neither do I! I'm much more interested in teaching my students to understand history and apply it to the present and future (obviously do not teach Communication Arts). Even in Communication Arts, this is not a focus. Kids do not care about this and an overwhelming majority of their parents do not either.

The cover quote "No one can outrun their destiny" does not bother me in the least. I was just as blown away by the crisp colors and awesome sounds of the movie as many others here. I must say, this is the first time I've heard of anyone who won't watch a movie because of an odd grammar error on the cover art. It just doesn't seem all that important. Now, I refuse to purchase, rent, or even view Gone in 60 Seconds because of the auto theft theme in the movie and how it actually taught people how to steal automobiles (had several after the movie came out in my area). Hey, we've all got to pick our battles...

If you think Gi60S was promoting crime, I was equally upset about the 60 Minutes special on using bump keys to defeat most locks. They re-ran that crap OVER and OVER and OVER again to the point that I nearly put retinal scanners on my doors.

But, getting back on topic, could someone please elaborate on the plot for Apocalypto? Is it 100% subtitled? I get the impression that this movie probably didn't get as much press as it should have due to Mel Gibson's media troubles at the time. Is it a decent flick?
