Default Most Polarizing Films

I just found this link of the top 10 most polarizing movies of the past decade:

http://unrealitymag.com/index.php/20...e-last-decade/

I am very interested to see what people think about each of the following films listed in the poll, and whether you like each or not and why.

Here is my opinion:

1) The Fountain--my favorite film, for the reasons provided in the link and more.

2) Vanilla Sky--beautiful story, decent acting, great soundtrack

3) Eyes Wide Shut--immersive and interesting, but not a huge fan

4) The Blair Witch Project--one of only a few movies that truly terrifies me. without a doubt the best marketing ever done for a film, and a throwback to the horror masters who realize that things are scarier when they are in your mind and not on the screen. the final shot is still incredibly innerving to me.

5) Fahrenheit 9/11--I think Michael Moore is a great documentarian, and I like Bowling for Columbine and Roger and Me, but I cannot stand 9/11 conspiracy junk, as much as I hate Bush

6) Moulin Rouge--completely unwatchable to me, despite its technical merits

7) the Village--hated the ending as much as other people. i think Shyamalan is a great director and good at coming up with concepts, but poor at writing the final act of his films. this film was one of the biggest disappointments to me because i thought the concept was genius

8) Crash--great movie and deserving of the Oscar. great writing and great acting across the board.

9) A.I.--yes, it is rather boring, but in many ways I consider it a masterpiece.

10) Watchmen--did not like it one bit.

Also, feel free, after commenting on each or some of the above 10, to list films you yourself would include as the most polarizing.

Interesting thread.

Two titles which seem to provoke polarization here on these forums are Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I enjoy both of those films very much.

I enjoyed Watchmen quite a bit.

I would add The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. People seem to either love it, or absolutly hate it.

I thank both of you for your contribution, and I actually agree with all three films that you both listed. However, I was referring to the 10 films listed in the link, and what you all thought of each of them. So, I was not looking for one's personal opinions of what films are the most polarizing, although I certainly welcome a change in direction in the thread if ppl think that is best!

I greatly respect its technical merits, but thought the story was uninteresting because I was never emotionally involved.

I respect Blade Runner in a lot of ways and think the concluding monologue is one of the great scenes in film history, but do not really like the film.

2001 I think is Kubrick's best directing job, but I admit I do not truly understand it.

actually, i've seen the spanish film that vanilla sky is based on, "abre los ojos", which also stars penelope cruz. it was a good film but i think this is one instance where the american version is much better.

At first I hated it but I LOVE it now.

I have also noticed that on various Star Wars forums that the 'Prequel Trilogy' has really polarized its fan base very badly.

And a big thank you goes to Mr Lucas for that.

hmm....i've had major reservations about seeing Alien 3 because I know how it opens and it really irritates me, but like anything else, I can't render an opinion until I see the film. I will have to do so.

Try to comment on the 10 that the link listed though.

Really, Logan? Most of the people that I know have actually seen the movie. What is your opinion of it?

Eyes Wide Shut is a bad movie from a great director. Shame it was his last. I love it for NK.
F9/11. OK film from a some what good director. Shame he lost the plot on this one.
A.I. I cannot understand why people do not like this film. Had me in tears at the end.
Blair Witch. Hate the type of camera work, so hated this, Cloverfield, Quarantine and all the others like this.
WatchmanStill undecided on if I love or hate this film.
Moulan Rouge. People always love or hate musicals and this is no difference. Me, I love it. Great songs.
Village.Guessed the ending 10 minutes in and the wife called me slow on this one. Good ending but with the previous films, it became to obvious and ruined the film.

Most polarizing film of all time though would have to be a religious film.
Jesus Christ Superstar, Passion of the Christ etc.

I liked it.

Bought it pretty much right after I rented it.

I like how they leave it up to the viewer about the ending.
[Show spoiler]was it all in his head? do you take things at face value? was it a dream? were only parts of it real and parts fake?

It messes with your mind in a good way.

Vanilla Sky-- Yeah, I have to agree with you on that. After it was over I could not get the Penelope Cruz character out of my head along with the choice Tom makes atop the building. I have not seen it since it came out. Now its bringing back all those emotions that I remembered when I first saw it.

Eyes Wide Shut-- I agree with you on that also. Not that big a fan either. However whenever I see it on the TV I just find it hard to turn the channel. I will probably end up buying the Blu-ray on this.

A.I.-- Again I agree with you. When it first aired on HBO I watched it and thought that it was no big deal. However just like Eyes Wide Shut, I could not turn the channel on its subsequent repeats. Like Vanilla Sky its bringing back all those emotions that I remembered from its viewing so long ago.

Watchmen-- Have only watched it once. Thought that it was ok. I will need to view it a couple more times to develop more of an opinion of it.

Have not seen any of the others mentioned.

Thanks for playing. I know exactly what you mean in regards to Eyes Wide Shit and A.I. You start watching it and think "eh" but you just can't turn the channel.

I also agree about Vanilla Sky. There is just something about it that is deeply affecting.

1) The Fountain -- saw it, liked it, will probably eventually get it

2) Vanilla Sky -- saw it, liked it, I think I own it on DVD, but someone borrowed it and never gave it back

3) Eyes Wide Shut -- bought it for $2, didn't really like it, although people have been coming around on it over the years (I don't think it's as polarizing today as it was when it came out)

4) The Blair Witch Project- saw it, didn't like it (kind of an original idea, just a boring movie to me)

5) Fahrenheit 9/11 -- saw it, didn't like it, but it had it's moments

6) Moulin Rouge -- never saw it

7) the Village -- saw it, liked the general idea, hated the execution of it

8) Crash -- saw it, liked it, didn't deserve best picture, but I hate that it became cool to dislike after that

9) A.I. -- saw it, didn't like it, it dragged on way too much, plus I don't like Jude Law

10) Watchmen -- saw it, liked it, too long to watch very often, but it's nice to have to watch once in a rare while
