That's what I wanna know. I was watching my We Are Marshall DVD, and thought the PQ was pretty good. Especially when it's outside shots... The colors were good. But I have a question.
There are many films on sale for BDs, but mostly old films. Like Silent of the Lambs, Speed, A Time to Kill... and i'd love to get them all. But I wonder if the PQ is any good? or at least better than the DVD version. Seeing old films given 3 stars for PQ really makes me wonder about the quality. Is the crappiest blu ray still superior to dvds? Please help... thx! ![]() |

Every blu will look better than an upconverted DVD. Now, there's a few out there that don't look much better than the DVD, but you will notice better picture quality. Some of the movies get bad PQ reviews (especially some of the earlier titles) because the movies don't look nearly as good as what this format can offer. It's a shame some of the newer catalogue titles don't get the transfers they deserve
DVD's have a resolution of something like 600,000 pixels, whereas blu-ray's have over 2 million pixels. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I hope this helps. Some of the more technical guys on here will probably chime in ![]() Last edited by tbizzle; 10-19-2009 at 08:08 AM. |

Some films however are not intended to pop of the screen some are old, some are new. However I would be annoyed if they made Silence of the Lambs sharper, etc, as it would in fact degrade the image. It was not meant to be particularly sharp, it was intended to have the grain it does, the colors where not vivid for a purpose and on purpose. Basically, it should remain faifthfull to the intent of the filmmakers. |

and with all Blu-rays, your viewing distance and screen size plays a large role.
I think American Psycho (for instance) which got pretty bad reviews, looks better than the DVD on my 32" LCD in my bedroom..... probably not worth the upgrade for PQ alone for most people if they saw it...... but a comparison of it and the DVD is night and day with my projector. I also have yet to see a Blu-ray that wasn't worth the upgrade to me based on PQ/AQ , and the ones I don't double-dip on are simply the ones I don't plan on rewatching that much. |
