Default DVI single or dual link?

My old tv uses DVI as an input of 1080i. The only way I can capture full resolution is to get HDMI to DVI cable. I notice DVI comes in Single and Dual link, what is the difference in two? And which one should i get? btw, i'm using PS3 as a bluray player/games.

Be carful with using HDMI to DVI cables with a reciever. I had trouble getting audio to pass with the HDMI to DVI cable connected, but when I removed it and did only HDMI it worked fine.

You should test it if you can before buying anything.

Dual link basically has more bandwidth, so both devices would need to be dual to take advantage of this. Check out wikipedia to get a better explanation.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi

DVI is video only and does not pass audio.

Signal
  • (Single) WUXGA 1920 × 1200 @ 60 Hz
  • (Dual) WQXGA (2560 × 1600) @ 60 Hz

Bandwidth
  • (Single) 3.7 Gbit/s
  • (Dual) 7.4 Gbit/s or more

You don't need dual like for 1080i.

However you do need HDCP capability in your DVI display if you want to connect HDMI sources like the PS3 to your display.

Depending on the age of your TV, it may not support HDCP and so you will need to use component cables to get 1080i to the display.
