Does anyone know much about Magnolia Pictures? http://www.magpictures.com
Who distrubutes their releases? I have seen a picture in an issue of Home Media magazine that shows their movies as BD and HD-DVD. The BD is in frot and sticking out from behind is HD-DVD version. Are the really neutral or is this a mistake? I think the titles they have out currently are: 1. Shuttle Discovery's Historic Mission 2. War Within 3. One Last Thing 4. Bubble 5. Bikini Destination 6. ENRON: The Smartest Guys in the Room Also, shown in the photograph are: 1. World's Fastest Indian 2. District B13 3. Lost City 4. Architect |

Magnolia Pictures is a new independent movie studio owned by Mark Cuban. I believe his company does their own distribution which would explain the very limited exposure/availability of these films. One interesting thing Magnolia has been doing recently with Stephen Soderbergh's "Bubble" and "The Architect" is giving their films simultaneous theatrical and home video releases. They release on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, and to order any of their titles you can go to hd.net. I just ordered District B-13 from there myself. |

Most of the movie is great. But in some of the darker scenes, it gets really grainy. So on the grainy part I tried switching from 720p to 1080i on the PS3 no difference, still grainy. So I switched back to 720p. Still grainy. Kinda annoying, but at least it was just a few minutes of the movie.
Anybody else have this issue? |

If the film itself was grainy, then changing from 1080p to 720p won't make it look better. 480p however...
Don't sweat about the grain. fuad |

Fast film used on low light has more grain. That's one explanation why some dark scenes in movies are grainier that shot-in-the desert at full blast-sunlight ones.
The alternative (which I've seen in several smoothies) is to blur the image and filter it to hide the grain. So if you're watching a smoothed night scene and it looks soft, and kind of not sharply focused on a disc, and it has no grain, and then it goes to daylight or studio shots and they are back to sharp, now you might know why. I prefer the grain to be left in with whatever sharpness the film stock has intact . |
