What are you talking about? Do you mean Firedog & Geek Squad? And for what?

I've used Magnolia twice. I'm not sure what Firefox charges, but a five speaker installation for $300 bucks was the best deal I found from a reputable company. That included the wires themselves.

The first time was awesome. The installers were very knowledgeable and dedicated almost 8 hours to making sure the job was done properly (a lot of notching was involved). I was so impressed I tipped them about $100.

The second time was as a gift for my in-laws (I actually like my in-laws. Weird, huh?). The job was performed while I was out of state. This time it was a different crew and unfortunately they did the crappiest ass job imaginable. They said they couldn't run wires through the ceiling or use the in-ceiling speakers. They said he couldn't have his regular speakers here and that he couldn't do whatever there. When the job was "finished," the 3 front speakers were put on the wall spanning a total distance of about 5 feet. That's right. You've got the center speaker, the right speaker 30" to the right and the left speaker 30" to the left. So lame I'm getting pissed off right now just writing about it. Oh yeah, and they didn't use studs or even anchors to hang the 3 front ones. Just put them in the drywall as is. Oh, and forget about it when Magnolia says they'll call you back in a timely manner. But that's another story altogether. Anyway, an assessment team eventually came out to investigate my complaints and agreed that the installers sucked. The job will be redone soon.

Sorry for the rambling there. Let me just say this. I will use Magnolia again should the need arise, but I will make sure I am there when the installers come so that I don't have to deal with the rest of the crap.

Your mileage is going to vary with both places and most chain stores. What it boils down to is who they send and if you're lucky to get someone who's good. Many of these places also have a high rotation rate and the good fellows move on to better paying jobs.

If you have to use them I'd agree with Ex Accountant and watch them closely.

I would consider local speciality stores that specialize in HT installations and check local references.

Definitely Magnolia. those guys are actually really really trained. Obviously some people are better installers than others, but magnolia is much much much better than firedog as a whole. By far!!!!!!

Yes, I would - but I'll be scowling the entire time. Actually, I do plan on using them for a 3rd time as a gift for my brother. Damn, I'm a freakin nice guy, huh? The reason I'm bringing up this 3rd installation is that I just pushed it back. I was going to give it as a September birthday gift, but I am waiting until Christmas pending a successful re-do of the 2nd installation (they suck at returning phone calls so it's getting dragged out). But I suppose that's just my baggage.

Hire them and just make sure it's all done right the first time. Either that or start practicing your scowling.

i say do it yourself if you can. take the time, do it right, and let others boost your ego by telling you how good it looks and sounds.
