Default Onkyo PR-SC5507

Hi All,

I'm surprised this new onkyo pre/pro model has not been commented on yet.

Has anybody had experience with it? How would it compare to a Marantz AV8003? On the surface it has higher specs and is a more recent model but would it deliver the same quality sound?

Thanks for your guidance.

Can someone please comment in general terms between an onkyo pre/pro (successor of the PR-SC886) and the Marantz 8003? Is there a noted difference in quality? I can get the Onkyo at about 1750 eur and the Marantz at about 2700 eur...

Thanks again. Scan

Sorry,

At this point I only can comment on my upgraded (modified) Onkyo PR-SC885. What you are asking about is 2 generations from this unit. I have had the unit for 1 year and 3 months and like it very much. But, with the upgrades it is anything but stock and it will outperform just about any more expensive stock unit that you can think of.

You may want to look at this thread:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=110816

You may also wish to consider the Onkyo 886 unless you need all of the newest and latest and greatest. It will save you a lot of money. The Onkyo 886 can be upgraded like my 885 and again it will outperform just about any more expensive stock unit out there.

Thanks Rich!

What elements are upgraded in the modified Onkyo 886 model? Is such a modified model available for order in Europe?

Best regards, Scan

Hi Scan,

David Schulte of the Upgrade Company in Michigan, USA upgraded both my Onkyo 885 and Nick's (welwynnick in the UK) that did the comparisons for the thread that I suggested that you see.

Dave can perform the same upgrades to an Onkyo 886 as was done to the Onkyo 885 units. The 886 is very close to the 885 and only has some minor improvements. David does some proprietary work on the units, but there are certain areas of the design that he really makes an effort to improve. He replaces a lot of parts in the design known to him through many years (more than 25) of working on equipment. He works heavily to reduce noise including RF and EM in the designs. David works on both the digital as well as the analog side of the machine with great success. David introduces a lot shielding and damping, and I believe somewhere around 6 or so ferrite filters, replacement of the 2 prong electrical connector with a 3 prong IEC connector, etc. The latest work that David is doing is to replace the 7 stock fuses in the unit with I believe 7 Isoclean fuses.

The results of the audio and the video performance on both 2 channel and multichannel (including for Blu-ray) is very dramatic as Nick will attest due to his extensive testing.

If the results were not substantial and excellent for performance, I would not use my upgraded Onkyo 885 for my analog playback of my $30,000+ Teres Certus 450 Turntable system/Soundsmith Strain Gauge system as well as my extremely revealing and high end upgraded Denon 5910 which is teamed up with my upgraded Lavry DA10 DAC.

You can also check David's website and by the way he does ship units all over Europe, North America, Australia, and the rest of the world. You can purchase the unit already upgraded directly from David.
