Default Onkyo TX-SR606 & Onkyo TX-SR706

Hey everyone. I've been feeling like I'm missing out on half the experience of blu-ray so I'm looking to get a receiver and work on a modest system. I read that the Onkyo's are a good starter receiver. Is this still the case? Any other recommendations? Trying to compile a list to research since the big holiday shopping season is approaching. Thanks to any and all for advice and recommendations.

I think that the Onkyo 606 is a very good receiver for the price. I own one, and I have been very happy with it . You can find a lot of good info here: BD's Receiver Review Thread

I would go with the 706 Because of the pre-outs it has the 606 does not have !
Pre-outs are for external amps to add on . Yamaha & Pioneer make real good Receivers too.

Thumbs up Onkyo

Indeed. You can't go wrong with an Onkyo. They are probably the most " bang for the buck " receivers and HTiBs on the market today. Purchase one, and discover what you have been missing !!

my friend recently got the 607 and is very happy with it. it has the height channels, universal port and all the lossless codecs onboard, 6 HDMI ports too (5 in the rear, 1 in the front) and he got it at a really good price too. $380.00 at newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...pk=onkyo%20607

mind you this unit is great unless you want to have future upgrade capability then you will need a unit with pre-outs so that you can move to an amp in which case the 706, $506.00 at newegg is your choice.

best of luck with your search. i like Onkyo, recommended it to my friend who now has one and is very happy with his. you see mine in my signature. in fact, i'm going to go to an Onkyo pre/pro model PR-SC5507P in the first quarter (if not sooner) of 2010; that's how happy i am with them.

keep us posted.

thanks for the feedback everyone! I've read good things about Onkyo and it seems to be universally praised here. Definitely leaning towards one of these. Probably the 706, but we'll see. I DEFINITELY like the price range of these.

Same here go with on that has RCA pre-outputs your speakers may not like the amplifier and this gives you the choice to use separate amps and do many things like special audio modifications.

I’m thinking of going for the ONKYO TX-SR707 THX select2, soon as I have the first half of the money, then need the other half as its around £599.00

I'd get the 706 over the 606 becuase of the Audyssey MultEQ (vs 2EQ on the 606). I would also look at Denon. The Denon 1909 can be purchased for similar price. The Denon Audyssey version is even better (MultEQ XT).

IMO, the Onkyo's lost value after the x05 series. They started removing features for some reason....

How does the Yamaha RX 863 compare to the Onkyo 706?
