Im considering purchasing this Receiver, and would like to get a feel from the experts here as to if its a worthy investment.
Im very new at this and woudnt really know whats worth what, however I have done some research, Im concerned with picture quality I read some one claim this receiver leaves a faint blue streak in the picture(maybe it was a particular batch of models?) I see that driver king has this receiver and his views are very helpful so I dont know? whats what......I am looking for a modest priced receiver that wont effect picture quality when using HDMI connections...I have a HD cable receiver, sony bluray player those will be whats getting run through the receiver. Thanks for your wisdom and knowledge. |

I won't claim to be an expert, but I do own the reciever so I can probably help you out a little bit. But I do agree with you that Driver King would probably be one of the better people to have answer your questions.
Pros I like that it has 4 HDMI connections in the back, as it makes connecting all of your HD devices extremely easy. I also like that the Audessy calibration microphone is extremely easy to use. I know that there has been some debate here and in the AVS forums about the quality of this unit, but I personally found it to be extremely accurate to my ear and I was unable to adjust it to make the sound better. Maybe that's just me though. Cost is definately a good thing as it is one of the better recievers that use the new HD audio codecs (DTS HD, DTS HDMA, DOLBY TRUEHD, ETC) in that price range. It also has a very nice look to it, and at least my unit doesn't get nearly as hot as I had heard before purchasing it. But do make sure that you do keep it ventilated just to make sure. Cons Not really a con, but you are unable to change the inputs in the on scree display (osd)..for example...I want to change DVD to Blu ray and VCR to Xbox360, but this unit doesn't allow that. The 706 does, so if that sounds important to you, then that is something to think about. I can't honestly say that I have seen a difference in my setup, but I have heard others mention it so I'll put it in the cons. I have heard of the blue tint in the picture as well, but as I said I have never personally had that happen to me. I will say that the video upconversion isn't the best out there, but being 1080i I can't say im shocked. The only thing I use it for is my vcr occasionally, so I'm sure my source material isn't helping much. All things considered, I think that you can do ALOT worse than to buy this unit. I am extremely happy with mine, and I am pretty sure that most of the members on this site would agree with me. Good luck with your purchase, and keep us posted on what you think of the unit, whichever you choose, once you get it home and set up. |

I bought the 606 last august, basically because I wanted the decoding of lossless audio it featured. I wasn't concerned with the upconverting because I was letting my blu-player handle that. The four HDMI was the other reason. Just the right amount of inputs for my HDDVR, blu-ray player, game systems and such. I suggest getting banana plugs for your speaker wire. With any receiver if the speaker wire touches other speaker wire the channel will short out. I love my 606, and haven't looked back....

Friend of mine had the 606, it has a very heavy effect on the picture, not in a good way. The pic was duller, less detailed. He ended up running HDMI straight from his BDP to the tv and using the Onkyos multichannel inputs for audio. In, the end he ended up replacing it all together.
It's a simple experiment any Onkyo user can do at home, find a nice bright 2 min clip in your fav blu-ray , watch it a few times then run the HDMI straight to your tv and repeat. The difference is very noticeable. |
