Default Went shopping, help me decide

These speakers were recommended to me yesterday when I went shopping.

I would like your opinion on both of them

The TRIBE series... I would only put 2 in front (TRIBE 1)
http://www.totemacoustic.com/product...pecifications/

The CANTON CD-50... I would put 3 in front
http://www.canton.de/de/hifi/cdserie/produkt/cd50ii.htm

with a SUB.

These speakers would be plugged in a ONKYO TX-SR607

Thats all I can afford for now... have a look at the specs as they dont tell me much. I did compare both of them yesterday. The TRIBE's are definitely better but a lot more expensive, however I would only need 2. The CANTON do sound great, but 3 of them would be ideal

I appreciate your feedback

Thanks

You are in a tough spot. Those speakers range from 8 ohms, 6 ohms and 4 ohms. Your Onkyo 607 can't really handle the load demands put on it for a 6 ohm or 4 ohm speaker. In order to do this, you would need an extrnal amp. However, to add an external amp, you would need a pre-out on the back of your 607, which it doesn't have. Therefore, these speakers do not match up very well with your 607, and I would recommend getting a receiver or pre/pro and to add an external amp to get the proper benefit from these speakers. They are both amazing speakers and your your friend has great tastes, but you simply do not have the juice in your 607 to feed these things. In order to get the proper performance from these speakers, you would need to also purchase a receiver with pre-outs or a pre-pro and then an external amp as well.

Hi Dan!

Being a very satisfied owner of a pair of Totem Sttaf floorstanding loudspeakers, I can assure you that the Tribe 1 will come with the same outstanding build-quality and performance.

I should also add that the Canton is a fine speaker manufacturer as well, but I'm obviously somewhat biased towards Totem Acoustics.

If I may ask, what price were you quoted for the Tribe 1 speaker?

John

I beleive the Onkyo DOES handle a 6-ohm load, but NOT a 4-ohm load. If he were to choose the Tribe III, then he'd be out of luck with the 607.

The Tribe I is rated for a 6-ohm impedance.

This summer I heard the Tribes(I think they were Tribe II's not small but they didn't look as big as the III's) and though I've never heard any other on walls to compare to - they didn't sound like on-walls and I'm surprised at how well they played at loud volumes using only a 60wpc receiver(NAD T-747). Well the NAD 60wpc is probably closer to a much higher rated AVR but the Tribes are great speakers!! I Just bought my speakers before I heard the Tribes so I wasn't considering changing but it kind of made me want that NAD to see if it can make my speakers sound better since the Tribes sounded that good. I dragged my cousins around with me that aren't into HT and even they were like "Thats's just from those speakers?!"

Anyway can't speak for Canton but try to listen to both. I bet you would like the Tribes but the Cantons could sound good too.

John, considering how hot these things run with just 8 ohm speakers....would you at least be a little weary of running 6 ohms with it consistently?

Perhaps I would, as I've heard ONKYO's do run hot, but I have no experience with them so can't really judge. However, I would think that if ONKYO says this model can handle a 6-ohm load, it should be allright. Your point is well taken though.

Considering the specs from Onkyo themselves I would think the receiver still capable on accomplishing the task with 6 ohms speakers also but I'm in the same boat as you John.

I have not tested this receiver with a 6 ohm load but could get this info quickly in the store I tried the Sttafs they sell Onkyo and Canton also so I can get the Manager's opinion on that and come back to you guys.

Here the specs of the receiver.

I think the OP would most certainly appreciate that, and I'd certainly be interested to hear as well.

Hi

Thanks everyone for your reply...

I made my decision and bought the TRIBE 1 speakers today. I only got the 2 fronts for now... will add 2 rear in the next few weeks. These speakers sound really good and I'm really confident that I will enjoy my 1st mini home theatre!

I'm from Montreal... and I had never heard of Totem speakers! They actually build them about 20 min from my place! They ship in 48 different countries

I decided to go with a different receiver... I got the INTEGRA DTR-30.1 instead of the ONKYO.

So I'm ready to setup everything... you guys have been of great help in the past week on differents forums sections (blue ray, general, speakers)

Thanks again.

I got the speakers for 725$ each... and I got the receiver for 950$ plus tax.

Daniel

Hi Daniel!

You got a good price then. I think they retail for around $895.

I should also add, and I MUST, because I can now finally say there is another member on this forum who is a Totem owner! Congrats!

Hehe yup actually the guy just gave me his quote on em for 875$.

I was gonna say that there is absolutely no comparaison possible between the 2 as the Tribe is a bigger speaker and will perform much better all around. The guy told me you don't want to compare these 2 and the choice was simply a no brainer. As for the over heating well considering the power of the Tribe and the Impedance recommendation from Onkyo he really does'nt see a problem, he sells both products himself.

Nice purchase!
