Default Rerouting channels on a reciever

Hey can someone tell me if this feasible and if its really worth doing? I'm trying to use some old speakers from the 80's to connect to a new hdmi receiver i will be buying in the near future. Right now i have 4 speakers, a pair of ads l420, and a pair of RCA type 502s1 loudspeakers wired to a small tweeter in a passive setup each fitted in their own respective custom box (these might be really old maybe 50's or 60's but from what i remember they sounded pretty good and got pretty loud). I'm trying to spend the least amount of money possible and still have a nice surround sound setup. Can i get away with just buying a center channel, a receiver, and using my 4 speakers for a nice setup? Is there anyway to reroute the sub channel to those rca loudspeakers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope I understood your questions correctly.
  • Buy a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver and a center channel speaker.
  • Use the two RCA speakers as your front speakers and the two a/d/s speakers as your surround speakers.
  • Go to the receiver's menu.
  • Set the subwoofer to NO and surrounds and center to YES.
  • Set the center and surround speakers to SMALL.
  • Set the front speakers to LARGE.
  • Set the crossover to 80Hz. Check the frequency response of your center and surround speakers. Make sure this crossover frequency is at least 10Hz to 15Hz above the low frequency extension of those speakers.
  • Run the calibration program inside the receiver.
  • You will be set. The receiver will redirect the LFE channel from the subwoofer and the bass sound from your surround and center speakers to the two RCA front speakers.

Hey man i got a few more questions, I looked at the passive crossover setup of the RCA loudspeakers and saw that the small tweeter is 8 ohm impedance and the capacitor its wired to says 90 on it, I;m assuming thats microfarads? Also the tweeter itself its like 2 inches in diamter compared to the 12 inches of the loudspeaker. I'm wondering what I should do with this, if this can help me find the frequency response? Or maybe I should make a new crossover with components not from the 70's haha?

From that information you provided, it is impossible to tell the frequency response of the speakers. If you buy an SPL meter and download some free test tones, you may be able to measure the effective frequency response of your speakers in your room.

If you set the crossover in your new receiver to 80Hz, you should be ok. In most cases, the relevant frequency is the low end frequency of you speakers because you do not have a subwoofer and you are redirecting all the bass sound to the RCA speakers in the front.

There are some reasonably good subwoofers for less than $150 and you may be able to find one below $100.
