Default Perfect Vision magazine survey shows people want combo players

According to page 7 of the August 2007 Perfect Vision magazine, here is the results of their readers survey.

81% own a home theater system and have invested more then $11,000 in audio/video gear.

9% own an HD DVD player

8% own a BLU-RAY player

12% plan to purchase a HD DVD player

15% plan of purchasing a BLU-RAY player

33% plan on purchasing a combo HD-DVD and BLU-RAY player.

I wish the BLU-RAY camp would make Universal Studios a attractive business offer that they would not refuse. If Universal Studios were to go neutral and release in BLU-RAY then there would be no need to own a combo player or HD-DVD player.

Even if Universal was to go neutral, I still think people would want a combo player. So many people have such a hard time making a decision on their own.

I definitely agree. This is why HD media has not caught on more rapidly. People are afraid to make a decision.

I disagree. With Uni neutral, there would be no need for HD DVD since everything would "theoretically" (Batman Begins & the Matrix) be available on Blu-ray, so why buy a combo player when all you need is a Blu-ray player.

Batman Begins is already possible on Blu-ray...it's just not out yet....

someone should sticky this...because this is the most confused title in topics...

I've seen time and time again where people assume BB is a Universal title and not Warner...

the vast majority of people are idiots who would rather pay more for a mediocre combo player than the sum of the cost of getting a good standalone of each type... simply because they are too thick to figure out which disc goes into which player - these are the same people who's VCRs perminently flashed 12:00

Sad but true, evidence of the dumbing down of America, and by extension the world.

Those people who voted are not really going to buy a combo player; that just seems like the best answer in the middle of a format war. That's the problem with the "plan to" part of the question.

^^^ A lot of people don't have the connectivity capability for a lot of boxes.

e.g. How many people without HDMI receivers could get HD audio from two HD disc players via analog connections?

Right now people see a war, and their non-partisan response is that they would solve the dilemna with a combo player. It also means not buying anything right now because they also aren't going to pay $1200 for a combo player.

The HD DVD zealot's combo-nirvana concept is a combo player that somehow is cheaper than a Blu-ray only player. Never gonna happen. Combos will always be more expensive than a BD only player, because of the engineering and royalty costs. And so these combo-wishing consumers will always be faced with an expensive entry point while the war continues.

If Uni goes neutral, the vast majority seeing a war and wanting no part of it would realize there no longer really is a war, and would go Blu-ray. It is for damn sure than nobody would spend a big pile of extra money for a few secondary features that HD DVD temporarily has over BD.

81% of the people surveyed spent over $11,000 on their gear, if they don't have HDMI receivers, then they got ripped off.

If they are spending that much, then they probably don't replace components regularly.

They got ripped off (or rather had a mind fart) if they bought something in the last 1.5 years. But, what if they have a $6K receiver that is 3-4 years old?

But, point taken on the pricing of components. If they are spending that much, then they should run out and all by a combo player today. $1200 is nothing.

Someone spending $11k on system probably doesn't buy receivers (with or without HDMI) in the first place!
