both of those components (TV and HTIB) should have basic analog connections. for example the TV should have audio L + R (red and white) out and the HITIB should have an audio in (same connection) and that will allow you to listen to whatever is on TV.

Right. The optical output on your TV is only going to send 2.0 stereo sound to your receiver anyway, so you may as well use the analog ( red & white ) RCA connections. It would beat putting out extra $$ for an optical to coaxial adapter in order to get the same sound, especially if this is only a temporary set up anyway. Save your money and put it towards your new HT receiver !

since my tv has an optical out, i found an Optical Toslink to Coaxial (RCA) Digital Audio Converter for about $12 at Mono and a Optical Toslink cable for cheap from there as well. so for about $20 its going convert my sound to the receiver digitally. will it be 5.1 tho? my next big purchase will be an Onkyo receiver, i was looking at the SR507 if i get one.

Mikalh, that 20 bucks is probably going to be a waste. First of all your trying to listen to sound coming from the TV, so im going to assume your trying to listen to cable TV in surround, the difference between analog and digital connection is going to be nil. just use the Left and Right audio cable to connect it. Then you can use HDMI when you get your new receiver.
