Default PS3 Temporary blackout

Hey guys and gals
I was wondering about something that happens to my PS3. Sometimes when I am playing the screen goes completely black for like 3 or 4 seconds and then it comes back. Last night it did it to me when I was on the menu. It does not happen all the time, just once in a blue moon, but I just want to know if anyone knows what it could be.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have the video cable running thru the receiver? Mine does this during movies when it switches from 60fps to 24 fps. If hooked u thru receiver it might be a bad video cable or issue with receiver itself. I'd check the cable regardless first thing

Yes I have it running through the receiver via HDMI. So then it may be when it changes from 60 fps to 24fps. Will check it out then. Thanks

Mine blacks out when it switches resolutions. Specifically when it initially loads certain discs. I also have mine hooked up to a receiver. I think that its normal.

Can you name a specific instance this happens?

Switching resolutions or refresh rate. My PS3 does the same thing with my Samsung LN52A650, regardless if it's a movie or game.

If anything, your TV should have an info button/banner that tells you the resolution you're watching in and what the refresh rate is. Check it before and after (assuming you can reproduce the incident), and I bet they'll be different.

I could also be digital handshake issues with HDCP.

Same thing here. Mine is running through an Onkyo 606. It only goes black for a few seconds when changing resolutions.

If it's happening when you first launch a game, start a movie, etc then it's normal. It blacks out while it's switching resolutions.

If it's happening while you are actually in a game or just sitting in the menus, then it is not normal and is likely caused by a momentary loss of signal followed by renegotiation.

Faulty cables or faulty switch inbetween are likely causes. Try connecting the PS3 directly to the TV with each HDMI cable (having a switch implies there are two HDMI cables involved).

If the problem only shows up on one of the cables, then there you go. Bad cable.

If the problem doesn't show up with either of the cables plugged in directly, that points to a bad switch on the receiver.

If the problem still shows up in all cases, then either both HDMI cables are bad, or something is wrong with either the PS3 or the TV. If this problem has always been present from the beginning, a firmware upgrade on the TV might be needed.

If the problem still persists, then the next steps would be the replace both HDMI cables. And then to bring over a friend's PS3 and see if it experiences the same issue when connected to your system.

This happened to my dad when he was watching DVDs and Blu-Rays. It was the HDMI cable.

It has happened to me mostly in gaming and does it at random. Like I'm in the middle of a battle or whatever and "poof" and then it comes back. I will try the different scenarios you guys have suggested to see what the problem is. Thanks to all who responded

Let us know if it was the HDMI cable. Seriously, it could be the most expensive HDMI cable in the world, yet when you switch to a cheap one, it may work. I think HDMI compatibilities is the biggest joke ever.
