Default Help me choose a receiver!

My Denon 2310 just went dead (can't turn on), send it back for refund.

Which of the receiver should I consider?

Yamaha RX-V765 ($390)
Onkyo 707 (Refurb $555)
Onkyo 806 (Refurb ($529)
Pioneer Elite 21VSX ($468)
Pioneer Elite 23VSX ($625)
Onkyo RC-680 ($679)
Onkyo TX-SR876 ($888)

Does 876 has nice video chip that able to rival with oppo?

I will admit I am a Pioneer fanboy and went with the VSX-23. However, I will say that Onkyo 876 is a very impressive receiver if you can get one for that price.

I counter your Pioneer with Onkyo!

I can say the Onkyo 805 is great! Which is why the 806 got my vote. Actually I'm more of a fanboy of Pioneer than Onkyo. If I hadn't come across such a nice deal on my 805 I would have probably went the Pioneer route. But the 805 is my first receiver and I'm in love.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the selections you posted though.

Are you no longer a fan of Denon? I would try and audition each of them if possible.

I like the 876 over the 806 because of what I read about how the 806 added some bells and whistles, but stripped it of some of it's real power. If I'd go Onkyo, I would go 875 or 876, in that order.

As far as the VSX-21 or 23, I like power, so I gave the nod over the VSX-21. Is it worth an extra $150....that depends if you consider this to be an important feature to you or not.

Harman Kardon makes some pretty nice stuff in your price range too. One of the good things about Harmon Kardon is they're known for not inflating their power rating. Some people will look at what is listed and brush them off thinking they are weak because they list 75 watts per channel (just an example) but then when they look at lab results the receiver that lists 120 per channel is going to give much less clean power.

Default I second HK

I second what Mordir is saying. I just got an HK AVR 354 - 75 watts per channel and it BLOWS away my Onkyo 606 I had - 90 watts per channel. I've also heard a number of the other receivers that you listed. I was able to get the HK cheaper, and I liked how it handled music and HT. If I had to choose from just the speakers listed, I'd go with the Pioneer elite. I think they are well built, and have the both the 21 and 23, and think boht are great units - I'd go with the 23 if money was no option.

+1

If I didn't run into a great deal on my Pioneer Elite SC-05, Onkyo was on the top, and I would have been looking hard for an 805, myself. The 805 could provide for around twice the current draw during dynamic peaks (at reference levels) over the 806. There are a LOT of happy 805-ers out there.

In the end, I'm glad I went Pioneer. I have been beyond satisfied with the power and sonic poise produced by the SC-05.

i ended up pick 21vsx, did pay more cause of the sales tax in my local dealer, thx mode and look of the receaiver plus iphone compatible is one that outshine the other receiver in the list, onkyo one has the best specs but most of those feature is not that useful and they receiver produce higher heat than other brand and the very ungly lcd screen text.

I'm pretty sure if you buy the Pioneer Elite online, then the warranty won't be valid. I'm not sure if you care about that or not, but some people do.

thought that amazon was an authorized dealer?? i know many ppl buy there receivers there. also i bought my onkyo 606 there and i registered my onkyo online with no problems?? why would they not honor their own warranty?

Pioneer does have numerous online authorized dealers, like Amazon. For their Elite products, however, there are no online authorized dealers. They won't honor a warranty for an Elite product bought online. I don't know why they do this, maybe to keep from dealers being able to discount the Elite models too much.
