Default Magic the Gathering Tactics: Coming in 2010

Unsure if this will be PSN or a full disc release, so just posting in the PS3 forum
Collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and SOE, this will appear on PC first, and will follow suite on PS3.

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/1...ering-tactics/

Quote:
Wizards of the Coast will team with Sony Online Entertainment to create Magic: The Gathering — Tactics, a turn-based tactics game based on the popular collectible card game franchise, the companies said Monday.

Sony Online Entertainment’s Denver studio will develop the game first for the PC, and plans to release it in early 2010. A version of the game for the PlayStation 3 is due later.

Unlike the recent (and excellent) Xbox Live Arcade game Duels of the Planeswalkers, Tactics will incorporate the collectible mechanics that make the card game tick: Players will expand their teams by purchasing booster packs and starters, then use their new acquisitions to customize their spellbooks.

The pay-as-you-go model should be familiar to those who played Magic on table tops, or the online PC game. And the gameplay will likely feel something like Dungeons & Dragons: Miniatures Game, the tabletop war game also published by Wizards of the Coast.

Tactics will feature characters and spells from the universe of the popular collectible card game. Players will be able to take their customized team of creatures to battle through solo scenarios or take them online to compete against others.

Regular expansions, tournaments, achievements and rankings are also forthcoming.

Several years ago, there were rumblings about Wizards of the Coast’s plans to sell virtual goods to folks who wanted to play the new D&D fourth edition online. But these unpopular plans never came to complete fruition. But the collectible approach makes more sense for this new videogame flavor of Magic, since fans of the game are used to rolling the dice (and dropping the dough) for sealed, randomly assorted booster packs.

This seems very weird to me haha. I play the card game with my friends all the time. I never got into any other card game than this one, but i don't think i'd play a video game of it.

there's already an existing PC game..it's ok.
but if they're going to incorporate a pay to play system where you actually have to buy cards/booster packs with real money..I'd rather be playing the actual game

If this is pay to play it won't even compete with Magic Online. The PC interface is just better for that. Love the game, used to play all the time.

I'm not sure why they couldn't make MTGO for the PS3/XBOX 360? I spend $200 a month on the PC playing MTGO.

The concept sounds similar to the old game Magic t G: Battlemage from the PS1 days, which itself played a cross between a card game of Magic and Ogre Battle. The game itself was ok not great. Would've been much better if they let you issue orders while the game was paused. I found I had to search the fields for my critters while fights were going on. Got especially irritating when I wanted to pump my Killer Bee.

I wonder if they'll implement keyboard/mouse support on this game. If any could benefit from that feature, it would be this one!

My interest is gathered.. I still buy cards on the occasion hoarding cards..

I use to play very often in high school and promoted the younger generations into joining in, by lending decks to new players to promote it over the evil yugi-oh which we had to fight to keep out members from that games evil grasp.

You would be surprised how many people would surround our lunch room table or early early morning table and ask us what we are doing.. and then followed by you wanna play, oh but I don't have any cards... well here you go...

Well show you how to play too, and we would couch the person, as it was not a complex game to pick up...

I look forward to see what mtg has in store for us on our Sony console.

lol My friends at school have successfully converted MANY students into joining us. Some went as far as going to a store for a draft tournament in order to play and finally get their own decks.

I would be interested in playing this game if they do it well. I used to play back in the day and I also occassionally run a card dealing business for people wishing to leave the hobby and make some money off their cards.

Well it sounds like the backend is the same but the frontend will be tied to a more tactical approach of the game.

I would imagine turnbased with unit maneuvering.. we will have to see what they have in mind, all we can do is guess.

This is odd that SOE and Wizards of the Coast are taking this route.

I was under the impression that Eye of Judgment was the evolution of Magic the Gathering.

Being honest here when I say I felt that eye of judgment was a step backward.

I found it fun. The only thing that kept me from playing it more (and this is with ALL card games) is lack of players in my area. Besides my school, no one else I know plays MTG or EoJ

Well I preferred MTG mechanics over EoJ, also what stopped me playing was the mat and camera didn't work well in my room.

Magic: The Gathering Tactics to have PC/PS3 connectivity

Quote:
Relations between Sony Online Entertainment's John Smedley and the guys from Penny Arcade have clearly improved since the Donut Debacle of 2006. Smedley recently took a moment to talk to Jerry "Tycho" Holkins about Magic: The Gathering Tactics, revealing a few savory tidbits about the title -- the most delightful of which being the fact that the PS3 and PC versions of the game will be interconnected, allowing a player to use his account (and all his meticulously crafted decks) on both platforms.

Basically, if you've got a laptop, a PS3 and an unslakable hunger for thin, rectangular artifacts imbued with immeasurable power, then your social life and work ethic are about to be assaulted on all sides. Good luck with that!
