Default Activision's Kotick: I'd Raise Game Prices Even More

And he had the nerve to attack the PS3 for it's price?!?!
I really wanted this game, but I don't think I'm going to buy it now.

Activision's Kotick: I'd Raise Game Prices Even More

Activision raised a lot of eyebrows last month with the revelation that Modern Warfare 2 will cost £55, but it's not enough for the company's CEO, Bobby Kotick. He wants all your money.

In Activision Blizzard's investor relations conference call, ActiBliz's bigwigs were asked by analyst Tony Gikas about their 'comfort level' regarding some of their more expensive games, with a nod to those that include expensive peripherals. The company's president and CEO of publishing, Michael Griffith, was diplomatic, noting "very strong retailer acceptance and support for all parts of our plan, including ... our price points".

Bobby, however, is not one to mince words. "And Tony, you know if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further."

Apparently the £99.99 retailers are listing for Tony Hawk Ride and the $149 you'll pay for the 'prestige' release of Modern Warfare 2 (there's no solid UK price yet) aren't enough.

Sometimes, we're surprised Kotick can even see, with all those dollar signs in his eyes...

To simply put it. Why not Boycott Activision then. Just develop a sense of discipline. Then they may realize its better to have some profits rather than nothing.

Wow. I usually assume that a CEO would think like that, but I'm surprised he actually said that. Pissing off the people that buy your product is not a good business plan.

i can only hope a brick falls from above to his head & knock sense into him

We're in recession & everything is hiking in price which is ridiculous. Things should get cheaper or stay at current on games.

I think they should actually consider making games of good quality while trying to control costs instead of churning out rubbish that they don't see good returns on

Activision can suck donkey balls. Already skipping on MW2, if he raises the price of MUA2 then I'll skip that as well...

Sony need to start plugging the hole that Activision leaves if they raise game prices. Basically this has to happen - Killzone 3 > MW3. If GG can pull it off then no trouble at all.

Hopefully once Acti ***** out COD too much IW will leave them like they did with EA and the quality of COD games will plummet just like MoH did when IW left EA. Also hoping that Marvel give their game rights to Capgod or EA, and Sony the Spiderman rights to SCEA so Santa Monica can make a kickass game after GoW3 is done.

+1... Max wins the Acronym-filled Post of the Day Award!

As for Kotick... even in the best economic times, that was a douchebag thing to say. But in a time when most industries are hurting, and gaming, by some miracle, is still posting profits because gamers are willing to sacrifice their hard-earned dollars for some joy, to even hint at raising prices is a slap in the face.

Props to Michael Griffith for being diplomatic!

Amen to that. I wasn't that interested in MW2 anyway, now I certainly won't be buying it. Or any other Activision titles if I can help it.

Heh.

I'm buying Modern Warfare 2 specifically because I support Infinity Ward (I did not buy W@W because I think Treyarch are a bunch of mostly talentless hacks). I refuse to buy their collector's editions, though.

Ditto for Vicarious Visions and MUA2. Like the game, like the developer, hate the publisher.

I don't let my dislike for a publisher color my views of the games under their umbrella. If I did, I wouldn't have bought a single game from EA in the past decade (minus the last two years, when they've made an excellent turnaround).

Bobby Kotick can bite me, though. That man is a cancer.

MW2 FTW ... I pay whatevers for QUALITY! I'll get my Money's worth even if it was $200! Although I'm settling on Hardened Edition most likely.

Ofcourse, its crap if he thinks he can bump prices on all Activision games including shite ones.

Companies will charge what they think the market will bear. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you do buy it - even if you cry all the way to the register - you are telling them they were right.

Marvel Comics did the same thing recently moving from 2.99 to 3.99 for a lot of books - and you know what? - as much as everyone complained, Marvel are selling basically at least as many books (if not more) than they were before.

We consumers actually have all the power here - we just allow ourselves to go along with what they do.

I'll agree that it was a ridiculous thing to say. With everyone losing money he should be happy with what he gets.

On the other hand, like Wreck said, I will pay a bit more for quality. The problem is though, when a game is lacking in said quality, the price doesn't start lower. Something like Modern Warafre 2 obviously got the best team working on it, they know their cash cows. But lesser games that don't have a huge fanbase or companies trying to break into the market should start off with titles at lower prices. Then more people would purchase at the lower prices, they could establish their target audience and charge more for the next quality game.

He must be thinking they have a ton of mega IPs or something. I mean MW2 yeah, and the Hero addicts, but besides that I can't even think of one Activision game i was planning on buying. Activision is not EA. he needs to get that through his head.

I suspect that purchasers of the MW2: Presitige Edition will be treated to a set of NVGs that will barely be worth the box they're packaged in, let alone any sort of good faith repair/replacement scheme on Activision's part.

Not sure what else they publish but the COD series doesn't cut it compared to KZ2, Resistance and Bad Company.
