Question Star Trek.. IMAX?

I've heard some talk about Star Trek being released on IMAX. And ever since Transformers ROTF I've been craving more IMAX? Anybody know for sure if this is gonna happen? Because It'd be awesome if it is.

Star Trek was shown in IMAX theaters, but in its original aspect ratio. None of the film was shot using IMAX cameras.

IMAX has nothing to do with aspect ratio.

They could easily shoot something on IMAX film and hardmatte it to the aspect ratio of the rest of the film. Even in projection in IMAX theaters, they could hardmatte IMAX-filmed material to any aspect ratio they want.

The thing about IMAX is the MUCH larger film. A filmed element on IMAX film is over 2x as big as the same element on 35mm, and this makes for greater resolution and finer grain, both of which are seen as necessary to project on the enormous IMAX screens..

Yeah, but still, nothing for Star Trek was shot on IMAX. I believe, so far, anything shot on IMAX for a movie has been left in the IMAX aspect ratio (in the theater) just for the 'wow' factor...

I think it's funny that people complain and moan about DNR being used on Blu-ray releases, but love watching movies in IMAX.. You wouldn't believe the amount of DNR and other processing IMAX has to do on any 35mm-shot film before they transfer it to IMAX. It would look horrible if they just used the straight 35mm footage. That's proof that DNR is a good thing, when it's used properly. (Unfortunately, there aren't many people that now how to use it properly apparently, and the ones that do charge more than the studios are willing to pay...)

That's why people are upset with The Dark Knight transfer. They used the IMAX print to make the master.

if it was shot in regular 70mm the aspect ratio would have been 2.20:1 and 8-channel sound - five channels up in the front for a wider more dynamic soundfield.

Which is a perfect example of people not having a clue. The people that are complaining probably didn't even look at it...

Of course they looked at it, that's how they noticed all the DNR and edge enhancement.

The Dark Knight has issues because it used the IMAX master that included DNR and EE in scenes. Transformers didn't have that because Paramount got the IMAX master and the 35mm master and spliced together the scenes accordingly.
Just look at these images of The Dark Knight Blu-ray:

And the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray:

People often confuse with imax, is best use imax in documentary because gci or indoor will make diffucult to shoot with the big imax camera, the film that use in imax is much much bigger than regular film, so is idea to use in open space only.

You can easily shoot an IMAX movie indoors. The Dark Knight did it several times.

LOL sorry I had to laugh, obviousily you haven't seen Journey into Amazing Caves the small spaces an IMAX camera wedges itself into (with the aid of a experienced IMAX cinematographer) is technically 'amazing'

The challenge with shooting in IMAX, as Christopher Nolan as pointed out, is that when you're shooting in IMAX, the camera generates loud noises, which makes it difficult to record on-set dialogue. And I think Nolan prefers that over ADR.

IMAX is very capable of shooting anywhere as long as it fits and there's a good lighting set up.

And I think it shows in both films. There is no extended dialogue scenes being shot in IMAX.
