Default HD reciever and tv connection

So you use a hdmi lead from ps3 to reciever then another going from reciever to tv.So this must mean you've got to have your reciever turned on all the time unless you dont get a picture from your ps3?

yes.

But what are you trying to accomplish? (you don't necessarily have to go through the receiver)

...But it makes life easier.

Trying to accomplish HD sound and picture.I dont like this then but thats the ps3's fault it needs more hdmi slots.I guess the latest blu-ray players have more than one hdmi.Sometimes i prefer to get use out of my tv speakers for tv comedy etc where youre not really bothered about surround sound as its just speech no action

It depends. My Pioneer Elite SC-05 will go into an HDMI "passthrough" mode if my Blu-ray player is switched on first. Also, it will go into passthrough mode if if my TV is switched on first, and its input then switched to the HDMI input from my receiver. My TV is a sony XBR4.

In this "passthrough" mode, the receiver doesn't power up completely, but goes into a sort-of elevated standby mode in which the power LED illuminates, but the display stays blank, and the receiver's amplifiers stay off. HDMI video and audio are passed through and played on the TV screen and speakers.

If I turn on the receiver's power, the TV speakers are instantly shut down and audio is played through the receiver and system speakers. Interestingly, my Sony TV remote's volume control will then control the volume on my Pioneer receiver. It's just a part of the whole HDMI compatability/handshaking standard, and I find it decidedly convenient at times.

In order to take advantage of all of this, just make sure that "HDMI Control" functions are turned on for the various devices connected via HDMI. There are usually options which allow for powering up different components by turning on an individual component.

Of course, your receiver must also support some sort of passthrough mode. I found out my SC-05 does so completely by accident, and it is a welcome feature for those times when I want to keep the audio low key.

Cool well i answered the first member wrongly what im after doing is using my ps3 with hdmi picture signal but using my tv speakers when i want.So the reciever would have to be on stand by but it would still send my picture signal through? thats great Obviously i have to use my ps3 hdmi port to send the HD sound to my reciever and dont want to be swapping hdmi leads all the time.

I know it's a bit of an inconvenience But then again I don't mind having my surround system on when I'm playing games.
