Default Prices on Discontinued Game Guides

I was just browsing Amazon and eBay out of curiosity, since I usually always buy a strategy guide with my games. Some of these prices are flat-out ridiculous to todays market, and prime for sellers.

I see Oblivions GOTY Edition guide selling for $115+ brand new, Folklores going for $43 - $150, and original Fallout 3 for $95, and so on. Looking at my guides at home, I can probably score almost $400 just in guides.

I realize these are discontinued, but what gives?

Quick answer: people are dumb

Long answer: something about the rarity of a discontinued item and the geekdom of possessing said artifact is a boon in the underground gaming world especially when it comes to "cult" classic games. With any type of hobby there is a hardcore group that collects and will put hefty value behind seemingly worthless objects. One man's trash is another's treasure!

it's like marvel vs capcom 2, final fantasy series... etc.. of course.. marvel vs capcom 2 not so much anymore

The joys of Amazon's 3rd party sellers like a new copy of Folklore guidebook for $150. (Though I got my copy for free because my store was going to throw it away anyways since it's discontinued and was removed from the computer system and is what we call pennied out meaning can't no longer sell it).

Makes me wish I had some game guides laying around that would sell for that much. I wonder how much I could get for my original Link to the Past guide.

i never really got into pokemon, i had the red one when i was 10 or 12, and it was fun, but then i found out i needed to get the other ones to collect the other different ones, and i decided to stop there before i bought ten different versions of the game

I used to be really into it back in the day but the last like 3 or 4 years I have kind of lost interest in the game.

Thanks guys, especially alphapyro. I thought I was seeing things when I saw people list Folklores strategy guide for $150. I think I scored it brand new for $5 or 6 last year.

Just because they are listed at that price, it doesn't mean it will sell.
