Default Anybody else buying strategy guides...

for the main sake of trophies?

I used to NEVER buy strategy guides (atleat not in the past 10 years, alot of times when I was a youngster tho) but now when I got a good game and it has trophies alot of times a trophy will be ...

"Collect all of "blank" to receive this trophy" - Gold

for example, collect all of the gold boxes in BF: BC .. all of the treasures in Uncharted and so on...

I'm an adult gamer, and albeit I spend alot of times on games, I just got way too many games I hardly play, (haven't gotten around too yet) so now that I want to try and always attempt to get all the trophies for a game I keep finding myself buying strategy guides to save time and get the collectibles without having to completely scour a map/level ...

anyone else doing this? Ofcourse the guides usually help in other areas of the game so its not like im paying 13 bucks (the guide) for one trophy.

Any and all general strategy guide discussion is welcome in this thread.

Also, amazon.com is THE place for strategy guides, they retail at 19.99 at walmart and best buy and other places but they are always $12-13 bucks @ amazon.com

Once upon a time I would buy strategy guides for all my favorite games. (But honestly, a strategy guide for Madden?! WTF?) But nowadays I get the same information, if at all, from internet sources. They may not be available a week before launch like the physical guides, but they are just as useful. In general though, I try not to use them anymore. If I just can't figure something out, then I'll consult one but I try to limit that.

gamefaqs.com, sometimes it takes a while for the answer to get posted, but its better than shelling out an extra $15/game.

at the time, I could not find the information on the internet, and I searched for hours .. wasted more time doing that ...

I've just come to the point where, hell, for 13 bucks I get it, use it, then I can resell it at the lowest of 5 bucks ... usually around 8 bucks .. so only costing me around 5 bucks for the use of it isnt too bad, especially if u dont want to waste hours of gameplay trying to find crap.

I sometimes buy strategy guides to games I dont have or never will... I bought the super mario 64 strategy guide but never owned the 64, I bought it to read.

The few strategy guides I do buy I buy them mostly just for reading material.

I used to LOVE the Nintendo Power strategy sections where they would show all the maps for a game (like Power Blade.) It was always fun to pretend I was playing, and MUCH cheaper than buying the game. I really wish I would have played Power Blade myself, but I never found/got it. I can see the appeal of reading the strategy guide (you can probably use your imagination to make the game better than the reviews that way, too. )

Oh no I had played the game but I actually did this when going on a airplane trip imagine buying a guide to game to a system you never owned or purchased...

I read the thing over and over.. next was oblivion I got that for my birthday I just read that sucker at work treated it like a real book had the game but I found reading the guide at work a nice way to pass time during my break.

I want the fallout one now... haha

I bought the Fallout one on here (First guide I've bought since Resident Evil 1). I figured there was a lot I was going to miss. Once I beat the game then I'll go to the guide probably when the trophies come out.

Why pay for what you can get online for free.

With the internet and the access to pretty much anything, strategy guides have become obsolete. You can find all the info someplace without signing up or paying for anything. The last strategy guide I purchased and it was more as a collectible, as it is still sealed, was for Kingdom Hearts 2.

I typically buy the strategy guide for games like Fallout 3 that are so immense that it would take months for a decent strategy guide to be posted online.

For heavy trophy hunting, strategy guides will break the bank. There are so many games with trophies nowadays (and more coming all the time), that there's really not too many reasons to go out of your way to buy a strategy guide.

Just wait a bit, play another game, and sooner or later (usually sooner) the answer will appear online.

(the logic here being that if you've got the finances to invest in strategy guides for trophies, spending that extra money toward another game will net you more trophies for money and time spent than focusing in on one game)

Well, I doubt the site is listing an entire strat guide on there the day of game release, or first week at that ... I'll have to check it out tho when I get home.

I just use GameFAQS.com for stuff like this. I have never paid for a guide in my life (I'm an adult gamer too).
