Default PS3 HDMI Problem

So it is two in the morning and my PS3 is on. That's perfectly normal if I was gaming but not when I'm sleeping. Somehow it turned on automatically. I powered up the TV and it listed an HDMI type error. I just restarted the system and got a crazy green pixelated screen. Didn't look pretty. I shut it off again and waited a bit..checked connections. Powered it up and got a corruption error...lost everything on my hard drive...yay.....not sure what that was about. So I restored it.

Powered it up and just got a black screen. At this point I was aiming towards HDMI or my TV. I used the component cables that came with my PS3..which make the picture look like sh*& who would use these? lol. I was able to get an image but no sound. I switched the HDMI cable to another port and I was able to get sound but no picture....It's really weird but I'm beginning to think that my cable is crap. It's a rocketfish which is what a guy @ BB told me to go with. I'm beginning to think it is crap. About two years old. The good news is my system is still going but I'm not sure why my hard drive got messed up?? I played Monsters Inc tonight fine went to bed and all of a sudden my PS3 comes on by a ghost and blows away my hard drive...

If anyone can throw me some pointers, I'd greatly appreciate it. Should I go to BB and tell them to give me a new cable? Obviously I don't have a receipt and it's pretty old. It was my first HDMI cable. I thought for sure the cable would last me a long time. It cost about $70. Thanks

Edit: Another thing that ticks me off is the cables are so freakin stiff. It's ridiculous. I have to fight to get it into the HDMI port. Because usually I have to twist if around....I may just go with Monster..I believe those are warranted.

The component cables should provide a great picture. You probably just have to set the resolution for the component cables in the PS3's menu. You could use those until you get another HDMI cable, if that's what the problem is.

Well that sucks all around. You should know better now than to pay so much for an HDMI cable.

its gotta be your HDMI CABLE
http://www.monoprice.com/products/su...02&cp_id=10243
get a new hdmi cable (get all new hdmi cables) for like 5 bucks a pop
(always get 1.3a hdmi cat 2 cables)

also dont forget that if you restored your ps3 your setting is probaly 4801 and your hdmi cable probaly wont project 480i image
go to pitcure setting in XMB (when component cable is inserted0 and select the HD pictures (720p, 1080i/p,) also select 48-p for NON hd resolutions like when streaming game videos from the ps store

if you used component and got picture but NO SOUND then you have to go into the ps3 XMB and fix your sound to come out from the component cable

Let me get this straight...since my PS3 restored...the reason the HDMI cable isn't working properly might be because it's not set to those certain settings? I don't want to use component. I plan on getting a new cable today if the cable is the problem. I couldn't find the XMB settings though. You'll have to walk me through it.

im not home so i dont know the exact wording

its the 2nd xmb menu going from left to right

then go down to VIDEO SETTINGS and make sure the settings show the hdmi resolutions

or

maybe this will work
turn OFF the ps3 behind the unit (back left)
toggle the switch to off
let it stand for 5-10 minutes.
make sure the hdmi cable is connected to the ps3 & receiver/tv then toggle the swith back ON

the ps3 will read the hdmi cable as 'default' and make sure all the hd resolutions are correct

if you cant get this to work i can call you later and walk you thru it.
it takes maybe 3 minutes

actually youre a yankees fan, i renig my offer.....lol
j/k im a mets fan and HATE the yankees

IDK... If the cables are defective I doubt this would cause the PS3 to turn on or cause the HD to screw up.... I'd think you should contact someone at Sony regarding these issues before spending more money on cables you might not need.

GREAT NEWS!!!!
youre welcome by friend

i was starting to get the feeling that it wouldnt work and you'd have to ship the ps3 to sony for $150 to get it replaced

i dont know why the harddrive would do that

do you have a psp with 'remote play' enabled or recently sold your psp?

do you play madden 10?

I'm having an HDMI problem with my Onkyo 606 and my PS3 (60GB). When the PS3 is set to 480p, I get lines in the picture. Other resolutions are ok. When the PS3 is connected directly to the TV(Samsung 46" 1080p) via HDMI it is fine at 480p.

I thought it might be the HDMI cable from the Onkyo > TV but when I set my satellite box to 480p(which is connected to the Onkyo >TV) it is ok. So the issue is between the PS3 and the Onkyo. Onkyo is set to "pass through".

I never had this problem before with my setup. It just started happening.

Any thoughts? Would a hard reset fix this? Also does a hard rest require a reformatting of the HDD?

What sort of lines? Do you get lots of horizontal thin black lines across the entire picture? Might be a handshaking problem at 480p/480i with the Onkyo due to interlacing.

Try unchecking 480i from your HDMI video configuration (XMB: Settings > Display Settings > HDMI > Configure Manually > uncheck 480i). I'm not 100% sure it will let you, but it's worth a shot.

It's also possible that your Onkyo 606 isn't handling a 480i signal properly and thinks it's a 480p signal (processing only every other frame of an interlaced video stream, which produces the black horizontal lines I mentioned above). It might be worth giving Onkyo a call and inquiring if that model has any issues.

P.S. Hard reset probably won't fix this, and no it doesn't do anything to your hard drive.

The horizontal lines look black & white. So if I'm watching a 480i/p extra on a blu-ray or streaming from Netflix @720x480, it looks like a worn VHS tape. Sometimes the picture breaks up. The lines affect the XMB menu too. Not sure about PS1/PS2 games.

If I set my satellite box to 480p, no picture problems when connected to the Onkyo via HDMI.

Thanks for the response.
