I am guessing this question has been asked before but I searched for 15 minutes and couldn't find anything so I am sorry if this is a repeat post.
How far is everyone sitting from their TV's. Right now our living room is fairly akwardly big. As in its to big to be an ideal viewing enviornment but to small to "section" the room into distinct sections. Right now I am sitting about 14 feet from my 50" 1080p TV and I am fairly sure I am not getting the benefit of 1080p at that distance. What is everyone else sitting at and what is the ideal viewing distance for a TV of my size and resolution? |

Ask her, move the couch closer or bigger TV? Maybe a projector would be good from that distance

Hello
I have a 30" CRT Tube Television, and my viewing distance is 16'. At that distance, given my high quality resolution and color fidelity; any source differences can be easily discerned. Certainly, given my experience of watching more than 13,000/hrs of HD content of HDTV Broadcast and Blu-ray; watching at home on a quality display is no different than movie theaters; whatever distance relative to the screen, is entirely subjective; whatever you like is what is correct. Given the quality of High Definition, it is as a movie theater; some like to be in the front row, others in the back row, and others still, like the areas between. Once a quality display is acquired, it's really up to you. Certainly, it is not as it was with the many compromises of Standard Definition and Interlaced Broadcast Television. Thank You |

There IS a guide somewhere, & maybe someone will post it if they see this thread. That said, I sit about 8-8.5' away from my 50" 1080i DLP. I too think you are quite further away than you need to be to get the Full Benefit of your HDTV. But, as an above post noted, time to bring up the PROJECTOR/SCREEN idea with the Mrs. Many here like the option of the Drop Down Screen so they can watch TV for normal viewing & use the SCREEN for Movies & Sports.

On another thread of several pages where people stated their screens and sitting distance I added them and the average was I think about 3.5 Picture Heights away from the screen (Which is equivalent to sitting in the last row on the theater against the back wall) probably because of that (in)famous table where it tells you where is the farthest place you can sit and still see the 1080 lines clearly. kman, you're sitting at 6.9 Picture Heights away which is even double that. Sit at 7 feet or closer ![]() Or get a 120" Scope screen ![]() |

I am sitting either 10' or 15' (based on front or back row) 92-100" cinemascope 2.2-2.4:1 to 1.85:1 screen 6-7' from a 57" screen in back room. Bedroom and other tv's I do not measure. |
