Default 52" and its viewing distance, help.

I have a problem. I bought a Samsung 650A 52", the big mess is that I dunno If I had space enough.. I can only sit 9 feets away from the screen, maybe that is good when watching blu-ray movies, but what about games? Can I get blind or get sick for playing xbox 360 or ps3 on 52" from 9 feet away?

Any of you play games on a big screen?

A general rule of thumb is that the distance between the viewer and the screen should be between 1.5 and 2.5 times the diagonal size of the screen. So, if your couch is between 5 and 9 feet from the TV, you probably want about a 42-inch screen. If you’re sitting 8 to 13 feet away, a 62-inch screen would be optimal.

and no....I play on a 40in 2 feet away

I believe you are just one foot less than the minimum recommended viewing distance for a 52-inch screen. I routinely watch BDs between 8 and 10 feet depending on where I sit in my viewing area. I doubt you will go blind or get sick playing video games at 9-feet from the screen. Think about it this way, most of us sit around a foot or two away from our computer monitor - and some monitors are quite large (like the Apple 30-inch LCD computer screen).

Enjoy.

I've got a 52" Bravia - no problems with movies or games anywhere from 6-10 feet (2-3 meters)

I have a 52" TV and tried to sit 5.8 feet from mine but had to settle for around 6.5 feet or so.

I used to have a 46" TV, I always wanted a bigger one because of the black labels on most movies.. but that is ok, the big problem is with games, where there are no black labels (to make a 52" TV much smaller.

I bought it 4 days ago, and the store are not allowing me to change it, even though the law says "7 days for those regrets". My private TV room is 9x10 feet.. so.. i guess I may go blind playing games like Soul Calibur IV and Dead or Alive

5'8" ? What if you move your head? Would you be out of focus?

Didn't mean the sarcasm, but your comment seemed odd to me....with all due respect.

You sit closer than I do, tell me, do you play games? I also dunno if the backlight intensity may have to be let lower when watching close.

Yeah, I play games on it. My backlight is set to 3, I think (max is 10, I believe). The only issue I've had is with the movie Cloverfield. Watching it on a 37" TV from around 7 or 8 feet, I was fine. Watching it on a 52" from around 6.5 or so feet, I started to get a little motion sick from it.

I choose the distance I did because of the charts/calculator. Of course, I could be interpreting them wrong. It doesn't seem too close though and below is a blurb from the article the chart came from. Bold added by me.

Quote:
What the chart shows is that, for a 50-inch screen, the benefits of 720p vs. 480p start to become apparent at viewing distances closer than 14.6 feet and become fully apparent at 9.8 feet. For the same screen size, the benefits of 1080p vs. 720p start to become apparent when closer than 9.8 feet and become full apparent at 6.5 feet. In my opinion, 6.5 feet is closer than most people will sit to their 50" plasma TV (even though the THX recommended viewing distance for a 50" screen is 5.6 ft). So, most consumers will not be able to see the full benefit of their 1080p TV.

What about audio? Sitting 4 or 5 feet away from a 50" TV may be fine for video, but i like to be back a little farther to soak up the wider soundfield.

Wow, I think I am the only one who sits 15 feet away. Got 52" sammy, and I like to stay on bed. =P Though whenever I watch a new kick ass action film, I make that 6-8 feet.

Blu lover, 52" and 7' is fine if you adjust your TV proper.

For example, watching Pirates or Casino Royale on the last rows that are shown on this pic of this screen ^^
is equivalent to watching them on your 52" at 3' and I don't think nobody on those rows died
and actually may have had a splendid time

On this note: I'm getting a new screen in March next year but I'm scouting now. Wall mounted, I think I can have it 9 ft. from the sofa. How big can I go?
