Default Anyone planning on seeing The Lovely Bones?

Ever since LOTR came out, I've become a follower of Peter Jackson, so I really want to see this film. But usually I prefer to read the book first. Has anyone read the book, and if so, is it worth a read?

Also, is anyone planning on seeing this movie? I haven't heard much talk about it in the forums or elsewhere. . .

Read the book. Enjoyed it, but found the character of the mom way too self-absorbed (don't want to revisit that aspect of the story). I also found the choice of Mark Wahlberg to replace Ryan Gosling as the dad terrible casting, considering the progression of the character. I can't imagine him pulling off what's required of the character. You'd need someone with more range to make the character work.

I can't say for certain the film is good or bad since I have yet to see it, at the same time I feel the ending works best in literary form and would not work for a lot of filmgoers.

Wow! Thanks for the insight (and very professional critiquing, I might add )

I can't wait for it. I am gonna see it opening day. I loved the trailer, never read the book, so I won't have anything to compare it to. Might be a good thing.

No problem.

In retrospect I guess it makes sense that Peter Jackson would want to make a film like this. Much as No Country for Old Men was The Coen Brothers returning to the same territory they explored with Blood Simple, The Lovely Bones is the same territory Jackson covered in Heavenly Creatures. He's returning to his roots. Well, his non-zombie (Dead Alive), non-alien (Bad Taste) roots anyway.

It's Peter Jackson, so I'll definitely be checking it out. I hope to see it in the theater (though I'm not usually an opening night guy). But if I don't get around to it for whatever reason, it'll be a definite blind buy on blu-ray.

I havent heard much about this film, but had hoped he was returning to his original roots... I have not seen Heavenly Creatures though.

I am definitely watching this movie, probly not opening day but sometime in the theatres.

Also, the book is absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see how well Peter Jackson adapted it.

I thought Heavenly Creatures was really good. It's a unique film and I would highly recommend a watch.

My wife read the book and speaks very highly of it, so I'm sure we'll end up seeing it in the theater, but I can't comment on it for myself.

This is getting some oscar buzz, so I'll check it out before the Oscars, of course.

Oh and dcowboy7, cinema is a more educated term of movie - as is film.

They're one in the same. I was refering more to the simple, non-verbal response and the apparent distaste of an integral part of film.
