Default PS3 upconverting SDDVD's?

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on the forums so I thought I'd start out by saying "hi" to all of you.

My question is this; I have just purchased a beautiful new Sharp 37" 1080p LCD and will, in the next couple of weeks, be hooking it up to my first Blu-Ray player... a PS3. I'm fairly certain that BD's are going to knock my socks off but I wanted to know how the upconverting of SD-DVD's looks when piped thru the PS3 to a 1080p display? I still have a ton of SD-DVD's and am curious how they're going to look? Anyone done this yet? Love to know.

Thanks!

The PS3 does a great job at DVD upconversion. Some have said that it is comparable to the Oppo upconverting DVD players.

Default PS3 Up converting

An HDMI cable is a must to get the best picture when up converting DVD's on the PS3. Many would say that any HDMI cable will due, but I have tried cheap HDMI's and Monster HDMI's side by side and the Monster delivers the sharper picture and richer colors. But look around the net you can find Monster cable's for less. Or take advantage of the return policies at CC or BB. If you don't believe the cable is worth the money after trying it out, just return it with in 30 days even if its open.

I suggest POTC for your first Bluray.

Have fun and welcome to Bluray.

It totally looks alot better. My Toshiba has a dvd player inside of it already, but now that I've got my PS3 upconverting, I couldn't care less.

A digital signal works equally good whether you use a $10 hdmi cable or a $150 Monster hdmi cable. That's the beauty of a digital signal. If you're talking about runs of 20+ feet of hdmi cable, that's where you see a difference between cheap and expensive cables - but nearly everyone's buying a 6 foot cable, and the $10 cable is equally as good as the $150 cable.

Yepp, get a $20 hdmi cable from monoprice.com.

I recently swapped from a Samsung BDP1000 BR player to the PS3. PS3 blows it away in upconverting.

I don't have a 1080p TV (only 720p) but I gotta say, the PS3 does a excellent job of upscaling DVD's. While it doesn't even come close to the precision perfect picture of blu-ray, but it definitely looks 1000x's better than if you were to play that DVD on a SDTV.

And yeah..the HD blu-ray goodness will knock you on your butt, its absolutely insane how awesome it looks, especially on a 1080p TV.

The PS3 is more on the smoothing side of upscaling.
