Question Upconverting question for PS3?

On the settings for PS3. I have checked all of them 480p,720p so on up to 1080p. My t.v. SONY XBR3 46 IN. can support all. The question is on normal DVD's (NON BLUE-RAY) the movie's are only up converted to 480p. Should I have only checked the box setting of 1080p to get a higher resolution (picture quality).

The PS3 doesn't upconvert DVDs at this point in time.

Are you sure? Why does my T.V. say 480p? The XBR has that feature to tell you what your picture resolution is. Any idea's

That's basically the PS3 doing progressive scan conversion from 480i to 480p. It doesn't take a lot of computing power.

So for the best possible picture which player should I use? My Pioneer Elite that uses component or the PS3 that uses HDMI? Any help would be appreciated!

Do you guys think Sony is really going to release an upscaling update? If so, I'm very happy, but still heard both ways on it.

Same for 1080/24p?

Ok, when I am watching standard DVDs with a widescreen aspect ratio using the PS3, I set the display setting to 16:9 and the PS3 automatically zooms it in. The zoom-in is much higher quality than zooming in using my plasma and I am quite sure some upconverting is going on here. The PS3 clearly has the processing power to do upconversion. Unfortunately it is just being used to zoom standard DVDs up to true 480.

Sony has definately stated that they will release an update that will make the PS3 upconverting. It is just a matter of time. Like the post above, they have quite a few other things to worry about right now. But, in good time, it will happen. Then, we will all be happy about getting the PS3, it will turn out to the best best Blu-ray player we could have gotten.
