Great news! I was planning on getting a Samsung standalone player with Netflix streaming for $199. But since the Netflix streaming for the PS3 is available, I might as well just get a PS3 Slim for $100 more

But how better to draw attention to your post than to just start a new, redundant thread?

The Samsung works with more Blu-ray titles than the PS3.

Try playing any Blu-ray title with 50hz or PAL content on the PS3.
All of those will work on any Samsung. No US PS3 will play the 50hz or PAL content.

Therefore it is true that the Samsung works with more Blu-ray titles than the PS3.

Just remember you still have to order the new movies on a Blu-ray disc and the audio quality is not the same as the hard disc!

50Hz -OR- PAL content? I'd disagree. I have an import of the BBC's first season of Robin Hood, which is PAL, and it plays just fine in my PS3. It also played fine in my Sony S350 when I had it.

From what I was told (could be wrong, but it's what I was told), PAL or NTSC is irrelevant with Blu-ray. It's region coding/locking that determines playback.

Precisely. Which is why, despite all the fanboy crap online about digital downloads vs physical media, the simple answer is BOTH can co-exist and thrive for the foreseeable future. For the exact same reason that people both rent and buy movies--there is a market for both types of consumers because they are the same consumer.

That's a load of B.S. I've played at least a couple of hundred Blu-ray titles on my PS3, and I've never had issues with a disk playing correctly. Ever.

Have you read any of the posts I just made?

Have you tried the UK import of Wallace & Gromit: A matter of loaf & death like I just said? Have you tried ANY discs with 50hz or PAL content on and tried to watch that content? Have you read the posts in the insider's thread asking for the PS3 to have updated firmware to be able to play discs like these? Have you read the posts on other forums which lists many of the discs that won't play back on US PS3s because of this?

Why is this being asked in the insider's thread if the PS3 can play it okay?:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...ostcount=10116

Have you looked at this site:
http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b

Which lists some discs as not being playable (even though they really are region free) and has notes against others saying something like "won't work on PS3" (because of 50hz).

I stand by my statement that the Samsung and others can play discs that can't be played on the US PS3 because the Samsung and other players can play 50hz titles & 50hz content. The US PS3 can't.

I received the Netflix disk on Friday - and watched part of one movie. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the feedthrough. To nitpick, however, the audio came through in stereo - not 5.1 surround.

Some others have been able to stream in HD content as well. I need to check my PS3 and WiFi to check whether I have the bandwidth to be able to stream HD content. However, first, I'll have to determine what HD content is available for streaming through netflix...

My $0.02.

It doesn't eleminate the need if you want to watch any titles with 50hz content that the PS3 won't play but the Samsung, Oppo, LG and Momitsu all will work with.
