Default Firmware upgrades on blu ray players question!!!!

Ok, im kind of new to blu ray, ive had a player for a month now.No problems with playback. My question is, if I never plan on using bd- live, and only use the player for watching the movies, is firmware updates a must???If yes how often???Will movies stop playing in a few months, if I dont do upgrades ???

Yes even if you don't use BD live you will have to update eventually. You will know when you put a movie in and it doesn't work.

sadly, yes, that is the truth. eventually a disc won't play sometime in the future and you will have to upgrade the firmware. I'm like you and am not crazy about the BD-live extras etc. but have been told it is inevitable. What I was told that the firmware should be complete and self-contained so that installing the latest actual (not a beta still being tested) firmware is the best way to go (since it should contain everything since the last actual firmware). dreading having to do this since everything runs and looks great but what can you do. technology marches on.

You may or may not be. Depending on which discs you attempt to play. You could get lucky and not have to update or you can pop in your next disc and have to update.

NOT REALLY,

I have a Sony S500 since 2 years now, and S550 since almost a year.

Never did updates, NEVER had problems, everytime played all the discs (BDs& DVDs)

I may probably need to update in the future though.
But so far, nope.

I will not upgrade until I will get a BD (I have like 60) that won't play
