Question Firmware Upgrades & Blu-ray Disc Playability

Okay, here's my question. The answer might already be on here but I cant find it. And I cant find a clear answer on other sites.

When a BluRay disc is first inserted into a BluRay player, the first thing that happens is that the disc's Java code loads into memory. If the disc fails to load or play, is it because the player's firmware needs to be updated so it can recognize a newer version of Java????

See Boulderskies nobody knows, but I don't think it's that simple. It does have to do with the Java Code, it's not a newer version but different commands and filters. The Blu-ray people are trying to foil the Pirates, but it also might be the downfall of this new format. I'm already dumping a Panasonic BD35 because it can't keep up with all the changes. They are already up to Firmware 2.0 and it still doesn't work right!

I'm suffering a similar fate with my Sony BDP-S550. I just updated to the very latest firmware and I still cant play about four BluRay movies. I'm finding this is a common trait and its really pissing me off.

Is there such a thing as a BluRay lens cleaner???

WoW! You know, I keep reading that is the changelog on both of the Sony players that I have, but I haven't noticed any improvements or anything. Which is fine with me. I did have a few issues, but those were over two years ago, trying to get a disc to play. But, has been resolved by now.

Anyway, I haven't had any problems with either player for a long time. I have the Sony S1 and S300. I wish that I could help you guys, this is the first time in a really long time have I heard anyone having problems with their players.

Keep in mind boulderskies, that there are still faulty discs out there. I'm not sure if that is your issue, but from my own personal experience, I had Batman Begins, and whenever it got to a particular point in the movie, it would skip. I wiped it extremely well, and placed it in both of my players; and still my result was the same in both players. After careful inspection, I noticed a small indentation that looked to be about the size of a hair, when I ran my finger across it, I could barely feel it. After getting a replacement from amazon, that movie played fine all the way through.

Long story short, it could be those discs. But, I wouldn't recommend a lens cleaner. I've read that they do more damage than good. But what do I know, I don't have any.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I just got off the phone with Sony. Despite being barely able to make out what the guy was saying because of his heavy accent, I did learn that unplugging the unit for 2 minutes may be a cure. I doubt it but I'll try it. I also set up a return/repair to their Laredo service center in the event it still has a problem. He basically said that if firmware is current and a power reset doesnt resolve it, its probably a mechanical lens issue.......

We have to get to the bottom of this, I think it has to do with all the DRM Junk they put on these Blu-ray's. What four BD Movies can't you play. The last one I could not get to work on my Panasonic BD35 was "Haunting in Connecticut," it just gave me "Can't Read Disc." I really don't think it's bad BD, there can't be that many out there. I think it could be the Players set up and features. Like I said my BD35 was set up with Wired Ethernet, 4Gb SD Card, and BD Live on. I am all up to date on Firmware 2.0. The Panasonic Users told me to disable my Ethernet, take out the SD Card, and disable the BD Live.....So I did, and it still didn't work. Now the only one it didn't work was the "Haunting...," I was able to play my "Transporter 1&2" BD. So let's see if we can figure this out.

I think someone should put pressure on the Blu-ray people that we Users can take off all the DRM Junk and just play the BD Movie. Maybe then they would wake up and stop putting all that Junk on them.
