Ok, so this has been bugging the heck out of me and I can't find an answer to it. I'd like for someone knowledgeable to explain to me why some movies have constant pulsating effect to it?
For instance, The Wizard Of Oz blu-ray has this constant what appears to be brightness fluctuations or something that is especially noticeable on backgrounds and things were it gets bright then dim etc. It it horribly noticeable and distracting at the first on the sepia toned scenes but you can also see it throughout the movie. Another blu-ray is Ghostbusters. It does the same thing throughout and it very distracting as well. I've noticed newer movies don't do it though there are some with scenes that do it occasionally but not throughout the entire movie like the ones I've mentioned. Is it due to the type of film used, lighting, color timing,????? It is very distracting to me. |

That's not what I'm saying though. I'm talking about in the exact same scene the pic will have a pulsating effect to it where it's like it gets darker then brighter then darker then lighter.

I have Ghostbusters and have never noticed that. Not sure what would cause it.

Well unless it's some problem with the hardware chain (auto level brightness suffering hysteresis? faulty connection? etc) rapid brightness variations in film are sometimes caused from uneven development on the film or due to improper storage or age(fading) in different sections of the windings on the reel. Film is being displayed at 24 photos a second or 90 feet of film per minute, so if for some reason above adjacent frames have different densities it would look as a brightness flicker or constant changing unevenness as the frames or uneven sections pass at the 24fps rate

I've occasionally noticed a rapid flickering effect on an interior scene where there is a bright light just off screen. One example I can think of is in a particular shot in 'A Clockwork Orange' where there is very harsh strip-lighting on an interior set (I think it's in the Korova Milk Bar). I've seen this effect on both DVDs and Blu-rays.
Could that be the effect that you're talking about? |

I have most certainly noticed it on Wizard of Oz. The first thing that came to mind is it has to be because of the age of film. As far a Ghostbusters, I have yet to watch the Blu-ray but it could be suffering from the same thing. Maybe that film wasn't protected well.

Are you describing "flicker" - random variation in intensity from frame to frame, or by "pulsating" do you mean a slower predictable variation.
I have not noticed anything unusual about "Ghostbusters" - I haven't watched "Wizard" on blu yet. On the other hand, I have watched enough movies over many years that I am no longer sensitive to flicker and other minor variations in the image. |

Sounds like flickering due to uneven aging of the film. I haven't seen the two mentioned here, but I've seen it on many other films, both on DVD and Blu-Ray. A few examples off the top of my head:

I have also noticed this "pulsating" "flickering" in older movies like wizard of oz, gone with the wind in a few scenes (mostly darker). I have also noticed it in recent films like Planet Earth, and I do belive it is just the film and not your set as I have 3+ sets and notice it on every single one.
