Default Why do you think J6P will embrace Blu-ray?

I have both the 360 add on and a PS3 so I support both. I have always believed that J6P would benefit more from HD DVD if HD DVD combo's could be priced at DVD prices.

I just don't see J6P buying new players to watch movies that can only be watched on these new players. While they might buy some, DVD is just in too many places to be put aside and forgotten. Those of us that have either format are what I would consider High Def enthusiasts. J6P isn't. I just see J6P needing DVD for quite some time to come.

How can it be any other way? What would get J6P to leave DVD in the dust and adopt Blu-ray? I really think both formats may end up just being niche formats until something replaces them eventually.

Several things need to happen for J6P to embrace hi-def:

1. One format needs to die; fear of buying the "wrong" format will keep J6P away.

2. HDTVs in more households.

3. Prices need to come down a bit.

4. Studios need to (eventually) stop releasing DVDs, supporting Blu-ray only (I take it as read that HD DVD will NOT be the victor in this war!).

I agree that 1,2 and 3 would make a difference.

4. When could this possibly happen though? I can't see it happening anytime within the next 5 years and I even see that as unlikely. Cars today are coming with DVD players. People keep cars for 5 years - many keep them for longer. I just see DVD being mainstream for another 10 years or so.

Once a winner has been established, I reckon DVD will be around for about the same length of time that VHS did after DVD's rise to preeminance. In other words, quite a few years. :-)

That's not going to happen for a long long time

Standard DVD players will be replaced by Blu-Ray players gradually on store shelves, until when J6P's cheap chinese piece of junk breaks a year or 2 after they buy it, and they replace it with Blu. It's an osmotic process, and there is no chance in hell DVD is going anywhere for a minimum of 10 years.

It is a derogatory term used to describe the average person.

You could just say "The average person finds HD discs too expensive", rather than "Joe six pack Finds......"

Unless of course you think your better than the average person, therefore feel the need to belittle them.

It's ok to call my family "average" but call us "J6P's" would be insulting.

Not derogatory, merely shorthand for the general public

If i wanted to be derogatory, then "mundanes" has been in use by the SF community for 30 years

Once TV goes all digital (Feb. 2009?) the process to adopt hi-def players will accelerate. I realize that SD TVs will be around for years to come, because of down-converter boxes and cable and dish down converting as well.

True but maybe they will start releasing Blu-Ray/DVD combo discs, it seems like the logical thing to do

I think what would really do it is that HDTV needs to become standard.
When you can not find a SDTV at all, or even an EDTV, and stores only carry HDTV standard, then the insentive to buy things IN HD will increase.
But since DVDs look so good on upsampled players, I don't think tey will "dissapear" for a long time.
I DO think that they will become a "universal" format that will run on everything (like a CD), and may even die down in sales, and there may even be many movies that will not be released on DVDs within 5 years or so, but I think it will still be cost productive to make them as well.
The fact is, J6P can tell the difference between DVD and BD, but not enough of a difference to care enough to buy the BD until they have incentive (like exclusive content)
BD needs to embrace DVD's, as they have, and educate the average joe about this so they don't think DVD's won't play on them. if they trust that their existing collection will look good, and run perfectly, they won't feel the need to go out and buy all their films again, which no one really wants to do. So if they know that their existing movies still play on BD players, and BD movies go down in price, they will accept BD more freely.
Combo discs are a bad idea, they are just more expensive and no one would want to buy it if they can just buy the BD or HD-DVD version instead for less.

what will happen is that HD DVD will go away.

BD player will continue to dropping.

more and more BD players will be coming out and less and less DVD players.

Eventually (probably when BD reaches 150-200) most manufacturers will just stop making DVD players.

Everyone will be buying a BD player (just because like everything DVD players will stop working)

once the BD player penetration is more then 70% (guess) studios will start thinking twice about DVDs.
