Cool Panasonic 600hz

Hello chaps!

I currently have a Panasonic TH50PX60 which I bought back in 2007. All in all it's been a cracking display, but over the years of owning it I've tended to avoid buying Blu-ray films and I've been sticking to DVDs.

Why?

Well, one thing that's always been a bug bear with me is the motion stagger caused by 3:2 pulldown. The problem is of course exacerbated with high definition pictures due to the stronger contrast and tighter object edges.

Now as you’re well aware, the new Panasonic Plasmas have 600hz sub-field drive which to my mind should remove the stagger effect as the display is able to refresh itself at a multiple of, or exactly at 24fps when required.

Am I correct or will the problem still present itself?

By the way, I am in the UK where the mains electricity is 50hz as opposed to the US standard of 60hz.

Thanks for your help chaps.

Simply speaking for my set, there is no stagger or jitter or anything else on my 600hz X1. It's a wonderful show.

600hz is the sub-field drive. It's not the refresh rate of the set. There are some Panny's that properly resolve 24p sources, but just because it has a 600hz sub-field drive (all of the Panny's and a lot of other brands advertise this feature) it's not the same thing as properly resolving 3:2 pulldown. The v10 and z1 series both do from this year's lineup, but I'm not sure about comparable models in the UK.

Like Aramis said, you need to look for a set with 24p Cinematic Playback.

The 600 Hz sub-field drive is IMO marketing hype to put up against the refresh rate advertised for LCDs (and if I'm not mistaken, not all 120Hz set feature proper 24p playback). So not all 600 Hz plasma handles 24p playback.

Thanks for your help. I was looking at the TH-P50V10 model which is indeed 24fps compatible.

Thanks chaps!

Personally, I think people tend to exaggerate the whole 2:3 pulldown. Ever since I can remember, we watched 2:3 pulldown or 60Hz on our CRTs for years before all these 16:9 panels took off. Judder is much better than flicker, IMO. "Judder" is what you are describing with 2:3 pulldown. I watched TV most of my life with this "judder". It just isn't a big deal to me. I'd much rather watch film with 2:3 pulldown than 2:2 pulldown as the flicker is what bothers me. I wouldn't want my plasma refreshing @ 48Hz for BDs, myself. 2:2 is used in projectors such as a theater would use. Even then you are seeing some film flicker but folks don't complain about this as much as they do the 2:3 pulldown.

My Pioneer refreshes @ 72Hz which does 24 fps by an even 3:3 pulldown. It is flicker free but the smoother camera panning takes a little time to get used to. I'm not sure if I would consider it an oustanding feature but it looks okay. The V10 does 24fps @96 Hz which probably looks even more like live TV than the Kuro when playing in 72Hz. I turn film mode off sometimes as it just doesn't look right with certain films, IMO.

If judder really does bother you, then by all means get the V10. At least you won't have flicker like the 24p mode on the G10/15s. I think movement on plasmas will always look better because there is no motion blur and lag issues such as the LCDs, even when refreshing @ 60Hz. I would be just as happy with a calibrated S1 as the V10 but to each his/her own. Happy hunting either way.
