Default Probably a dumb question

Those of you that listen to music (2.0) but also use the same equipment for movie watching (5.1) how do you have your speakers setup in your receiver? Do you use a separate sub while listening to music (2.1). I'm just trying to get everything sorted out to get the best experience possible...going out and adding a dedicated vinyl listening setup isn't in the works just yet, lol.

Thanks

Bill

It's up to you what you like better.I use the stereo setting on my receiver to get the sub to play also.But some people (Audiophile Snobs you know who you are!) prefer not to add extra bass to their listening pleasure & listen to it in right,left channel only.

As an Audiophile Snob I'll chime in and say that I understand people's desire to throw a sub into the mix of what was initially recorded as a 2.0 media. I suppose it's a preference thing. I'm a purist, so I choose 2.0.

There's no LFE channel, of course, in stereo music recordings. But, a sub can still be used if it does a better job with deep bass than the main speakers. There's no right answer here. It depends on your equipment and your room.

Everyone's A/V reciever is different. I have my speakers set to small and also have the sub set at LFE+Main (Denon). The Polk RM 50T's are not good bass speakers, so having the sub work is imperative. I notice that you have the Mythos One's as your fronts, so you also could use some bass help. When I go to pure direct mode, the sub continues to work because of the Main setting.

Thanks for the input guys. I imagine given the various types of music I like it may involve various settings for getting the best sound, at least to my ears, out of each recording.

I listened to Nevermind last night with the fronts set to large and no sub and it sounded great.

Fred the One's actually go down to 20Hz so they sound good without the addition of a sub although I do understand what you are saying.

I didn't realize that, which of course makes them full range. I'd likely listen in 2 channel without the sub also if my speakers went that low. I believe the lowest note on the bass pedal is around 33 or 35 hz. For music purposes it appears you have it covered in spades.

It all depends on your subwoofer. I have a REL B2 and it permits operation of both high-level support of main speakers and .1 channel. So when I am listening to 2 channel direct stereo mode the LFE is not on but my sub is integrated with the right and left speakers.

This is from the REL set up guide;

By connecting to the high level input on the REL from the amplifier, you build forward the sonic signature of your main system, including the tonal balance and timing cues of the entire electronics chain. In this way, the REL is fed the exact signal that is fed to the main speakers.

Most speakers don't have the power or efficiency to go low enough, so a big chunk of the lower frequencies are not even experienced. Almost everyone I know that is serious about hifi and music has a sub in their system. Once properly integrated into a system, there is no going back. Even with speakers that go down pretty low, a sub can still be beneficial. A sub gives more flexibility and you can tailor the crossovers to suit your tastes. Even better, you can send all LFE directly to your sub. It does not get purer than that.

I use the same equipment for both. When I listen to music, it is a 2.2 setup. I have a sub in the front, behind the mains (Klipsch Cornwalls) that is crossed over at the Cornwall's bottom end which is about 38hz. The sub at the back of the room is crossed at 80hz which is the lower limit on the rears if I use them to listen with. I have the mains set to large in the A/V receiver.
