Default WashingtonPost gives thumbs up to Blu-ray

It's nice to see an article from a major newspaper give a good assessment of blu-ray to the general public. Instead of the usual "DVD is just fine" arguement. Kudos Tom Shales.

Though the Comments are interesting and show that there are still many people who don't know or just don't want to change.

If it is favorable, and therefore intelligent, it is obviously not written by the usual Washington Post "Opinion" staff.

I just like to see people writing about Blu-ray without saying "have to rebuy everything". It really annoys me when people think this. They say "it's good enough" but that they also HAVE TO rebuy. It's like they're not even considering the fact these two arguments are mutually exclusive.

Shame he continues the false trend of associating Blu-ray with Sony specifically, because that just brings the ire of Sony haters. I'm not a fan of Sony myself, and I can totally see avoiding a format because of thinking it was spearheaded by just the one company that you don't like.

Weird that he says HDMI complicates things though. I'd say it takes an already simple task (square peg in square hole, circle peg in circle hole) and simplifies it down to only requiring ONE peg in ONE hole. I mean, if not for HDMI, I'd have to plug 3 cables in just to get SD.

Indeed, that's an argument I also don't get. Those that don't wish to rebuy their collection or part of their collection can keep their DVD's, which play fine on Blu-ray players (in fact, they get upscalled by most making them look better than they otherwise would)

Those that wish, can rebuy movies for the increase in audio/video quality and extras.

It would be naive to think that studios will just hand out free blu's to everyone that bought a DVD in the past. That reminds me, I shouldn't have thrown away my VHS's, since I could've sent them in for free blu's (sorry for the sarcasm)

The rest of the argument is indeed also comletely false. Blu-ray association is much, much more than just Sony and HDMI is the best cable I've had like ... ever. Before, it was one tangled mess of audio and video cables. HDMI keeps things clean, tidy and pushes both HD auido and video through a single cable. What more could one wish for?

It only took a few comments to get to the ramblings of a bitter HD-DVD owner.

BlueRay = Modern Laser Disk

HD Streaming Video already significantly outpaces BlueRay adoption and the many competing models are many years behind in maturity. Picture and sound may not be as good...but most people don't invest their retirement accounts in video and audio equipment good enough to take advantage of the difference not to mention the convenience of clicking buy or rent now for an instant download. No physical media model can compete with that and survive beyond a niche.

Wireless speaker connections that don't sound like a walkie-talkie on dying batteries...

Well, you asked!
