Default Question about speaker placement and stands

First: Is it better to have the front speakers on stands, or elevated? We're getting a new couch which will sit us a little higher than we do now. Right now, we just have the front speakers on the TV stand, which will be about 2 heads shorter than where our heads will be.

Second: Are all speaker stands universal? I have a Sony HT-SS2300 system and want to get some stands, and am looking at these Atlantic speaker stands: http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-Satel...0652541&sr=8-1

Thanks for any help!

It is recomended by most that the speakers (the tweeters) up front should be at ear level when seated. The surrounds typically a couple feet above ear level. You can get some excellent advice from both Dobly & THX's web sites on speaker placements.

For stands, not all are equal by any means. Here is a link to a site that I have used for two different sets of speaker stands: http://www.standsandmounts.com/

A couple points. 1) Make sure that the stand is rated for the weight of your speaker(s) many are designed for very light weight speakers. 2) If you have children, or have vistors with children, becareful since many stands will be very top heavy and easy to knockover once you set the speaker on top of the stand.

Thanks for the information.

What I meant by universal is: Save for custom stands/speakers, are speaker stands and speakers universal to one another. Meaning, the speakers all have the same hole diameter/depth, and likewise with the stands.

Thanks!

It depends. There are a couple of different mounting types that are pretty common. One is a screwhole in the back of the speaker and the other is to use a flat base on the speaker stand and just set the speakers on top. It's best to use some two-sided tape or something though with this type (IMO). It's common with stands to come with hardware to accommodate several different options. There are some others floating around out there though that aren't so easy to work with.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered a pair of the Atlantics, so we'll see how it goes.
