Default Question about speaker placement . . .

My front towers are toe'd in leaving them 4 inches from the wall at the closest back corner and approx 8 inches at the farthest back corner. Are these to close to the wall and do you think id hear a dramatic change by pulling them farther away? If i did hear a change what kinda of change would it be? My center also sits a square 4 inches from the wall as well? Whats your suggestions regarding my placement. You can see the current speaker placement in my gallery. Thank you for your time!!!

I wanted to mention people tend to say the speakers will seem "boomy" when close to a wall. i dont feel that they are boomy but would love to know advantages of possibly moving them farther out.

Hi,

I mentioned that I thought your speakers were too close to your wall in your gallery comments on June 14. I'm suprised you haven't experimented with moving them out even by a few inches.

Speakers like to have room to breathe, and traditionally perform better when placed away from walls and stands.

Try moving them out another 6"-8" and leave them there for a day or so, while playing some music or watching a movie. You may not notice an improvement right away, but you should be able to hear a difference after a while. The music should become more open and airy, with better imaging and presence.

John

This is my first time seeing your setup and I love your gear and the room's decor. You must not have any kids, right? I would like to have large vases and decor like you, but a 6 yr old and a 1 yr old make that impossible.

As for your original question, I agree with John. Maybe a little further out from the wall and to the sides if possible. GREAT SETUP!

I have posted this multiple times in different threads. It is a section from A Guide to Bipole, Dipole, & Direct Speakers.

FRONT SPEAKERS SETUP

For front speakers, put the speakers at least 2 to 3 feet away from the rear wall.
  • The distance between the two speakers should be between 6 to 10 feet.
  • The distance between your main listening chair and the distance between the two speakers should be approximately the same. They should form approximately an equilateral triangle.

  • The tweeters should be about the same level as your ears when you are seated. For smaller speakers, use a stand. Slight tilting backward or forward of the speakers until the tweeters point toward your head may also work.
  • You can slightly angle (toe-in) the speakers toward the listening chair. You can use a string to make sure both speakers are angled exactly the same. Angling the speakers too much may have two disadvantages:
    1. It may ruin the sound stage.
    2. It will not be very effective for others who may be sitting elsewhere in the room. Don't be selfish.
Play a CD with good soundstaging and a singer in the middle.
  • If the soundstage is good and wide but the center stage is blurred, move the speakers closer together.
  • If the center stage is focused and sounds great, but the soundstage isn't very wide, angle the speakers away from the listening position a little at a time until the soundstage becomes wider without losing the center stage.
  • Many speakers may sound better if they are pointed at your shoulders rather than directly at your head.
  • Always use a string to make sure both speakers are angled the same way.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment. Rooms are not the same and interaction with room boundaries, furniture, carpets, etc. play an important role in the sound that you hear.
  • Many experts believe that in a small home theater room, you hear the room and not the speakers.
