Default wall mount question

If you mount the wall mount correctly into the studs, i assume you don't need to reinforce the studs even for bigger tv's? It would just suck if there was an accident lol

Around 75lbs, the mount is rated at 160lbs so i'm not worried about that.

If you hit the studs in the center and use the lag bolts provided with the wall mount you should have no problem. The weaker point would be whether the mount can hold the weight of the TV. There are some mounts made of thinner metal and may warp or break under the weight of the larger plasma TV's.

oh ok thanks. I sometimes hear people use different lag bolts than what are provided with their sets. Is that usually because the bolts are too long/short or because the quality? 3 inch seems to be what is normally used.

I used the ones that came with my Monoprice wall mount. I think some change them out because they may feel that the ones provided are inferior to the shiny silver colored ones at Home Depot.

I used the bolts that came with my mount too. I purchased additional bolts at my local hardware store and applied the same amount of torque as I did to the ones that came with the mount and ended up breaking the head clear off one of the hardware store bolts. The bolts that come with the mount are normally rated such that they support what they say they support.

A tip when installing lag bolts is to drill a pilot hole and then coat the threads of the lag bolt with wax. I use bees wax but candle wax will work just as good. It keeps the wood from splitting. I use this method for hanging big heavy gear on job sites that have wood framing or wood attachment points.

Bar soap also works.

I used the mounting hardware that came with my mount. I believe my mount is rated at 160# - I'm rated at about 175#. After hanging the plate on the wall, i then decided to "test" it... I hung off of it for a few seconds, no noises/creeks/cracks/movement. Not to say the MOUNT would hold up to sustained use at 175# (although, imho - probably would) - but the studs/mounting bolts didn't feel like they were going anywhere.

Very interesting - do you just melt a candle and drip the wax on, or rub a hard candle on it.... I've never thought/heard of that before, but - very interesting all the same.

Keep in mind, most houses are framed using 2x4 studs (at least here in Canada). You won't get a bolt much longer than 3" into the stud at all. Most 2x4s in fact are 1.5 x 3.5".

after driving 4 5" lag bolts into 2x4s you shouldnt have any problem. just be sure you drive them through the center of the stud. dont rely on a shit stud finder, take a small nail or wire into the wall to determine

I've have always changed out the lag bolts that come with the wall mount. I would rather know that I'm putting in some grade 8 bolts than some so so quality ones. Either way its only a few more bucks well worth the piece of mind.

Um... A 5" lag bolt will go completely through the stud and into the room behind it.

I roll the threads against the bar of soap until there is a nice coating on it.

Used the ones provided as well. Monoprice says they have upgraded the bolts from the past and it shows. Quality stuff.

This is an often overlooked step that really makes a difference in installation.

I actually used some in a pinch once and there's almost no difference. Unless of course you just like wax.

Also very important. It's worth the extra few seconds to be sure you're lined up on the studs center. You only get one shot.

Unless you like spackling holes in your walls of course.
