Default 1080i Question

I got a 26" Toshiba hdtv about 2 years and it runs on 1080i. I recently got a Playstation 3 and was shopping for some Blu-Ray movies to start my library with. I noticed however most of the movies showed in the Video Options only 1080p with few (if any) showing 1080i. Does this mean that they only run at a minimum of 1080p or is that the optimum veiwing ability and would the movie play on 1080i?

They will run at anything down to base NTSC, 480i. Your player will do the proper conversion. What it means is that the source video on the disc is 1080p

Thanks, I was starting to worry I'd have to get a new tv again. How big of a picture difference would the 1080p to 1080i be on that size of a tv?

Welcome to the site, and to answer your question I also have a 1080i 46" sony hdtv, so that means that your tv's max. res. is 1080i but it will play all blu ray disks just in 1080i but it still looks awesome I hope you enjoy your blu experence.

on a 26" tv you would not notice hardly any difference between 1080i and 1080p

I don't notice much difference on my 46" sony so on your 26" the difference would be next to nothing.

You won't notice much of a diff from 1080i to 1080p on a 27 inch TV, but know that most of the newer TVs with 1080p have better processors and contrast ratios.

Also, do you have HDMI connection or a DVI connection?

You might have to use Component inputs if you have a DVI, as many players and recievers require a true HDMI to HDMI connection. So you may not get a video signal passthrough.

But, it depends on your TV, reciever and Output device....

GL, hope it works for you.

The tv does have 1 HDMI output (I never even heard of HDMI when I first got the tv) and 2 component and 3 S-Video/Composite outputs and was going to connect the PS3 via HDMI. Also, being it's a 26", is getting the $100 HDMI cable worth it, or should I get one for $30-50?

Get one from Blue Jeans or Monoprice. They're fine. I've dealt with Blue Jeans (bluejeanscable.com) many times, and they're awesome. Great quality, FAST shipping.

The hdmi cable that I use for my ps3 cost me $29.99 and it provides a perfect picture but some people swear by monster and others.

Someone posted a while ago that if your tv's native resolution is 720p and even though it will upconvert to 1080i the best you are seeing is 720p. Is that a true or a false statement. I have a 50' Sony LCD with native resolution of 720p. I want the new 52' Sony Bravia 1080p. I have a PS3. I feel I'm not getting the best picture.
