Default Receiver running less than 5.1 channels

I re-arranged my front room, so I am now closer to my tv, speakers, etc. I haven't connected my surrounds yet (need to run new wire and use banana plugs), so I set my receiver for 3.1 instead of 5.1. The audio sounds noticably better. Is it because of the distance or because of 3 channels instead of 5, so the receiver has more power to push each channel?

Thanks!

My guess would be a little of both.

depending on the imaging of the speakers that you have, you may have moved closer into the sweet spot and therefore it sounds better to you.

I was wondering that, actually, after I posted this. I was looking at the speakers, and I noticed that my R/L speakers are farther apart, toed in and my center channel is sitting a LOT closer to the listening position.

I am also wondering if when my room was configured the other way, if the speakers were too close together and interfering with each other. Is this possible?

i would have thougt there would be no difference 3.1 or 5.1 unless, you are either matrixing stereo into 5.1 or if you have an actual 5.1 source and you only have 3.1 you obviously would not have the surround channels other than that it should sound the same. now the fact that your a little closer (don't know how much) to the speakers than before that obviously has something to do with it.
