What is it doing (or not doing)? A spark can be bad, but have you tried playing something on it to see if it is still functioning?

sounds like you shorted it and the receiver went into protective mode. sometimes when speaker wires get frayed and on the back of the receiver you can get one stray wire touching the back pannel which will trigger the saftey mode. just unplug the power and make sure all speaker wires are secure then plug back in. if all is working then it should be fine

You lucked out ! As a precaution, you should follow the manufacturers advice & disconnect the power when connecting speakers.

It sounds like you lucked out and everything is Ok, which is a good thing. In the future ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS unplug your receiver before connecting/disconnecting speaker wires.
