Default PS3 resolution question

My PS3 is set to 720p currently, but how do I have it set to 1080i when playing Blu-Ray movies?

So I can play games on 720p and movies on 1080i.

Thanks.

Actually I do have one...

Do Blu-Ray movies automatically play at highest resolution despite what you set the PS3 at?

Cool Tell the PS3 what quality your TV can take

I believe it will automatically adjust to give you the highest throughput available. Now you need to debate whether 720p or 1080i is preferrable.

I think there is a setting in the PS3 that can search for the highest functionality/resolution of your TV, Assuming your TV goes up to 1080, it should detect that and adjust for it.
Not all games play in 1080, but all BD i know of are in 1080.

Cool Go into the menu, choose what resolution your tv will support

Check ALL of them that it will support. Then the PS3 will automatically adjust to match the format for you.

(sorry, I think my last reply was a bit vague)

Wouldn't that make his PS3 play in 1080i all the time? (unless a game doesn't support anything higher than 720p) I think he's asking if there's a way to have games always display in 720p, and blu-ray always in 1080i, without having to switch the settings manually.

Cool The PS3 will only play what is supported

The PS3 will try to give you the best picture possible but if a game is in 720p then he will only get 720p, it can't make a game turn into 1080i. There is no upconverting games that I am aware of (PS2 games yes but that is a different conversation). I have a 1080p capable TV, my PS3 will play Blu-Ray movies in 1080p but if I play a game, like NCAA 2008 it only plays in 720p, if I was watching a DVD I am betting it would play in 1080i (although I have never checked because I have a standalone upconverting DVD player/changer and why mess with a good thing when I don't have to?).

So...............long story short (or longer depending on perspective) , if he tells the PS3 what his TV can handle then it should automatically switch for him.

My TV supports both 720p and 1080i and most games are 720p and 1080i (supports both).

But I want to play games in 720p while movies in 1080i without having to manually change the settings every time I put in either a movie or game.

Just wondering if the PS3 has a setting that does that (choose what resolution you want for games, and a seperate one for movies).

No, you can't set them seperately like that.

im thinking of getting the onkyo 605 but read good things and "different" things about it. i have a panny 1080p plasma and ps3. i intend using hdmi only for connection. would this still give me a 1080p pq when the format i am using is exactly that or will it downscale it to an inferior grade??? i hope not
