Default A stupid question about resolution...

I have been reading a LOT lately, and I am confused....

Is it true that there are no HD-DVD players yet that support 1080p???

WTF???

If this is true, how can ANYONE even attempt to say the formats are even slightly comparable?

The XA2 is the first. And it is supposed to be able output 1080p/24 after a firmware update. It can do 1080p/60 now.

The A20 is supposed to allow at least 1080p/60.

The HD DVD spec requires the 1080p content to be encoded with flags to tell the decoder how to generate an interlaced stream for internal processing. And at this point all players (except the laptops) honour the flags. Any 1080p output is done through a de-interlace or inverse telecine in the output stage.

The Sammy uses the same Broadcom decoder as the A1, so it requires a de-interlace to generate 1080p/60. All the BD players (including PS/3) can output 1080p/60. The Sony and Pioneer can output 1080p/24. But, I don't know if any BD player processes 1080p/24 internally.
