hdtv is not required for blu-ray, however you will not see any improvement without an hdtv.

Hello. Welcome.

U need an HDTV (that's not a HD ready/ HDTV monitor). To get the most out of blu-ray, purchase a tv with 1080p. And it's not a stupid question, there a loads of people on here that have more than enough wisdom to pass on. just keep asking...

That is correct, and if you buy a new tv, it would be best to get one with a 1080p resolution so you can take full advantage of a bluray player.

a blu-ray player will play on any tv (i believe). for instance... the ps3 comes with a blu-ray player, and has video resolution output ability to whatever the tv is (480p, 720p,1080i,1080p). The blu-ray disc will still play. If you have an hdtv (720p), then that's the output of the blu-ray playing.
a blu-ray player, and disc are made for 1080p. Which is the best picture quality a there is...

A friend of mine at work recently bought a PS3 and used it to play Blu-ray movies on his 480i 54" tube TV. He said that you could still see a big difference (especially with color accuracy).

I would still get the HDTV first before the Blu-ray player though.
