Arrow Stupid question, I know

Why are movies that have dolby digital and then a better audio codec not set to go to the better track first? Doesn't really make any sense at all to me.

From what I remember, only Warner Titles do this. I could be wrong but I think this is the case.

I think it's just warner discs that do that. but yes...very frusturating. If it was going to cause issues with non-compatible equipment to have the lossless track be the default, then it would make sense. But considering any equipment can just convert a lossless to lossy no problem then, yes...why the hell indeed?

No such thing as a stupid question - however there are stupid answers

I don't know

It would be so much simpler than having to go to the menu system everytime

Most people don't have a Hdmi receiver that can play the better audio codec. Just at my job I know 8 people with Blu-Ray players only 2 including myself have a Hdmi receiver. 4 people have the player hooked directly to Hd-Tv set and 4 have player hooked up using optical cable.

ok...but like i said before i've never heard of a reciever or tv that can't just downgrade a dolbyhd/dtsma to there lossy counterparts. so it still makes no sense

the real question is why showtime shows like californiacation have 2 channel set as the default instead of futuristic dolby digital sound, i don't know who decides these things but i think they are stupid and your question is valid

I also think its just Warner titles but I've made a habit out of checking every time I watch a movie now to make sure I have the best audio on.

Just watching Face/Off, default is Dolby Digital, watching it with DTS-ES Disc 6.1 right now.

If it was that simple why do they even put the Dolby 5.1 or dts track on disc if everyones tv and receiver can downgrade the Hd codec. I know before I bought my Hdmi receiver it felt like every other week I had to do a software update because blu-rays did not play in my Sony bp1. I sold the bp1. and bought the Sony s350 and have not had to update once. I was ready to just give up on blu-ray having to do the firmware upgrades. I am glad I stuck with it. All tv,s and receivers don't have problems with the DD or Dts codec so people are happy. It is a problem to keep updating your firmware and most don't want to be bothered.

The receiver/tv/player doesn't do any "converting" from lossless to lossy. For TrueHD, there's an embedded/core lossy DD track. For DTS-HD MA, it's a little different, but it comes with the core DTS track.

It's setup for the lowest common denominator, which is people going straight to their TV set for audio. They can't typically play anything but Mono, Stereo, PCM, and Dolby Digital.

I think there are probably more average people who don't know the difference then there are those of us who care. Shame though.

There is probably even a group who say they care, but then just let the disc play out anyway and don't realize they are not getting the full mojo.
(I don't even really wanna think about those people.)

It hate too strong a word?

Would it be nice if it defaulted to the better track? Yes...of course. However, is it really that difficult to just select the pop-up menu and switch it quickly? How many seconds does that take?

That issue has been around for ever. Even with DVD. Back in 97 when DVD hit the market they almost always deffault to dobly surround as opposed to dobly digital or dts. I think the companies do market research and decide to make the default settings whatever is the most used format out there.

You would think with blu-ray technolgy they could write a little java script or coding or some sort that could communicate with your receiver and determine if your receiver or your player has the ability for which sound formats and then automatically default to your optimum sound format.

Maybe we will see this in the future if it's even possible to do.

On most stand alone players on the remote it has a audio button that you can use to switch audio. You don't even have to go into the pop up menu. I don't know if it is the same on a PS3

It's a series of buttons with the PS3. Triangle, toggle over to select the audio menu, toggle through the available options.

I just use my PS3 remote
First I hit Display.
Then I hit audio until I get the one I want to use.

That would work for me, but I don't want more than one remote. I use a Harmony and I have the triangle mapped as an additional command and X is Select.

Boo to sony for not including IR support and boo to Harmony for taking so long to get us an blue tooth solution.
