Does anyone have any idea if HDMI fiber optic cables are sold at 8 and 10 foot lengths. I understand that distances greater than 35 feet reveal the real benefits of fiber optic HDMI, however, to future proof my system over the next several years as the transition to higher and higher throughputs of A/V hits us is very important. Needless to say the lack of circuit noise and artifacts is a big plus.

It sounds like the OP is referring to those in-line HDMI to Fibre converters for use as extenders. I've heard of them used in places where EMI is a concern. Differential signaling over copper has a lot of bandwidth potential. I wouldn't expect to need fibre needed for a wiring plant for a long long time.

Actually there are HDMI fiber optic connections. They are the best money can buy. There is no degradation of signal at all with this technology, however, I was just curious regarding shorter length availability?
Thanks to everyone who's responded |

There is no benefit of buying optical HDMIs now to future-proof your rig. If your home theater gets bigger later, then get those optical HDMIs then. For now, if what you need is just 8-10 feet long just get that; it's cheap enough. fuad |

For everybody's reference, the HDMI standards specify does not specify a maximum cable length, but to pass "Standard Cable" compliance, a cable has to pass up to a minimum of 10 meters without the use of a repeater.
Another thing to note is that length is not just limited by cable factors but the receiver chip in the display also plays a part. There are some receiver chips that have cable equalization which can compensate for weaker signals. There are also "high-speed" cables that are spec'ed specifically for 1080p deep color and/or high frame rate applications. Finally, HDMI is a digital interface, similar to things like FireWire or USB, not like analog cables for video (composite, component, s-video) or analog audio, so many factors and challenges that affect analog signals don't apply to HDMI, such as quality loss or artifacts due to EM issues. |
