Default Best Audio to use for gaming

Hello everyone,

With my current set up, I always have my Onkyo805 reciever set on direct when I'm watching movies with my Sony BDP-S560 but when it comes to gaming on the PS3, I was wondering what everyone uses and/or what the best one would be, and what settings the PS3 needs to be set one. I usually just had my receiver on THX Cinema all the time. Also I am running all HDMI cables as well. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Tony

direct blows.

for slim ps3:
set the settings in the xmb to output the sound hdmi in BITSTREAM
you should set your settings on the onkyo when listening to blus to play in dolby dts master audio/dolby true hd/multich (for pcm movies)

for fat ps3:
set the settings in the xmb to output sound hdmi for LPCM
set the onkyo on MULTICH as that will process all the lossless audio

direct is very bland and doesnt use any audyssey eq settings or calibration settings

as far as gaming......use MULTICH setting to get the best sound

for your bluray player, set the player to output BITSTREAM and use the lossless audio codec on the onkyo ala ps3 slim settings

Thank you. I have been only using direct just recently, because that was the only way i knew to get the dolby truhd and dts mstr HD lettering to show up on my onkyo display. should I use a different audio then direct when watching movies too??

I think you mean LPCM Multichannel. If you do regular Multichannel, its just outputting everything out of every speaker evenly, and you dont want that...

I set mine to Multi channel for blu-rays, games, etc (fyi: you'll still see "TrueHD" on the display if you use this). Pure Audio for 2 channel music.

I mean Multi Channel on your 805 receiver. Just press "SURR" on your Onkyo Remote to put it in that mode. Set your PS3 to Bitstream HDMI audio.

when watching movies (using hdmi with slim) it should come up as the lossless codec as you cycle thru the surround sound modes

thanks for the info. just had another quick question. for BD/DVD Audio Output format (HDMI) and BD Audio Output format (Optical Digital), they are both showing Linear PCM, so i have to change those to Bitstream then? Since I'm running all HDMI, the Optical Digital shouldn't factor into play...

That's correct, the optical audio output format doesn't matter for your configuration so you can leave it as is. If you were to use optical for audio though, bitstream is the better setting to use. Optical only has the bandwidth for 2 channel LPCM. (I may have mixed this up, someone will correct me if I'm wrong though )

if you have the old fatty then you HAVE to set the ps3 on LINEAR PCM for your audio output thru hdmi

your onkyo will never read 'dolby true hd / dts master audio'
the ps3 has to send the signal decoded so your 805 will read MULTICH

MULTICH = lossless audio setting on the onkyo with a fat ps3 (fat ps3 has old hdmi chip that cant send non-decoded signal to the onkyo....it only send

if you set to bitstream with an old fat ps3 you will only get stereo sound

when youre playing games set the onkyo to MULTICH
when youre watching blu's set the onkyo to MULTICH.....if you want to check the lossless codec push select while the movie is on and it will show you the lossless codec on the top right (just make sure to pick the lossless codec in the blu settings before you start the movie)

Oh you have the fat PS3? Then you can't bitstream HD audio. You need to set your HDMI Audio Output (HDMI) to LPCM. The PS3 will then decode the HD audio internally and send the decoded signal to your receiver. You won't be able to see "True HD" or "DTS HD-MA" on the display.

Only the PS3 slim is able to bitstream HD audio.

Sorry, I thought you had a PS3 Slim!

^What he said, except setting the fat PS3 to bitstream doesn't mean stereo sound, it means you'll only get the core Dolby or DTS audio instead of everything. It'll still be 5.1, but not the high def track.
