Default PS3 doesn't upscale Blu-ray Disc "Standard Def" features?

My PS3 sends out the SD special features contained on Blu-ray movies to my LCD at 720x480 resolution. And then returns to 720p (my preferred resolution) on the menu. What's up with the downgrade?

I guess this is just a transitional period to HD extras, so they aren't thinking about making the PS3 upscale from BDs. That's the best I could come up with on short notice.

Seriously, I wonder if this happens on all BD players. It's been a while since I dealt with standalone BD players, so I can't remember.

the extras take up to much space to make them in hd so best option for them is to make them into 480 because thats the cheapest route and upscaling probably wouldnt look good and then its like why didnt they just use a 50GB disc or use a 50Gb disc along with a 25GB disc. i still think they just want to keep it as cheap as possible

I can only speak to the Panasonic BD30. When I watch the SD extras, my TV display does indicate I am getting a 1080p signal. It does not do this with my PS3.

That being said, I see no visible difference in the pictures. I mean NOT AT ALL. SD extras still look like crap. Ugly, ugly crap. I'd be happy with just one special feature in true 1080p, instead of five in SD.

Standard definition has no place in my life anymore. I just despise it.

If you get a good Amp like the onkyo then they upscale everything that is not 1080p so the 875 that I have dose it on TV, Games and films/extras and its so good that you don’t know that’s upscaled some times

I conducted a little experiment using the 480i special features on "Rescue Dawn." My Pioneer/Elite BDP-94HD upscaled the video to 1080p, but my PS-3 displayed the features @ 720x480. So, like you, I am wondering, what's up with that?

No, that's not true at all. The only answers are cheapness/laziness/being rushed.

Default Well, why are they even still doing things in standard def?

I think that the big movie producers need to stop their production of standard def and start shooting in HD. I have to watch the Harry Potter special features with black bars all around the screen! It is so annoying!

The vast majority of extras have been shot HD for the last 2 years. It's up to the studio whether to use those hd sources

Where did you get that from? What previous technology in your opinion has ever stagnated long after its release? And please show my a company that doesn't strive to make their products better with each new generation of units.

This is one of the biggest annoyances for me about the PS3 at the moment. Because my receiver scales anything that's not 1080i or 1080p to 720p, I get the ishy double scaling artifacts on my SD extras on my PS3.

There's really no excuse for the lack of SD scaling on BR movies... I always figured it was more of an oversight than anything.

It's actually my number 1 most wanted feature (with DTS HDMA a very close second).

some of the special features look so bad in SD miles worse than a film in SD which aint great to start with on a big screen.

I figured it would be false advertising so they don't risk it.

It is strange how bad some extras look though, I think they dunk the film in the toilet and wipe their butts with it before putting it on bluray, it looks terrible in places. I mean if that was the state of the original footage the main feature would never look that good.

For an idea of what i'm talking about, have you seen the original Revenge of the Jedi trailer. LOLZ.

But if the PS3 upconverts standard dvd's, then why doesn't it just upconvert the blu-ray SD extras? I hope Sony fixes this one day.

As others have speculated I think this problem of not upscaling sd content from BDs is just an oversight from Sony and the PS3 development team. I imagine things like in-game crossbar and DTS-HD MA decoding and Home are bigger priorities right now. Sony does not have infinite resources to make the PS3 do everything in the world all at once.

Being about to scale all content to a constant 1080p output seems like a no-brainer. That's not above-and-beyond, that's standard-practice for a device to be able to output a signal of a chosen resolution and scale everything to match.

If it can do it with SD DVD content, no reason why it can't also do it with SD BD content.
