The demand for a disc that size in the home market is a long road away....

Developers can't even fill up a 50 GB Bluray disc when making games, let alone 500 GBs....

Currently 1080p is the highest available TV resolution you can buy on the market, and we have yet to have a movie that has not fit onto one disc...

Of course, the extended cuts on the Lord of the Rings movies might make me feel different, I forsee those needing more then one disc.

If they can put 5 episodes of Smallville (3 hrs, 45 minutes) on one HD DVD, then I'm sure they can fit 250 minutes of ROTK(the longest EE) on one BD. And then of course SF on 4 more discs.

maybe, but take into account lotr will probably have a pcm 7.1 track or true hd/dts master audio 7.1 which will take some serious size. is smallville in a very high quality transfer? LOTR must be the ABSOLUTE BEST TRANSFER POSSIBLE

Default yes

the disc holds 500gb of info but what do we have to own to play it ,bd players now do dual layer. beyond that the failure rate of the disc comes into play depends on the development and what it takes

At last month's WWDC, id Software showcased a new demo of their G5 game currently under development. Just the demo boasted over 24gb of textures.

Developers (the good ones, anyways) are constantly looking to push the envelope. The need for a 500gb disc might not be too far away. If you take a Moore's Law approach to this, it'll only be 7-8 years before we have a viable disc of this capacity.

Maybe 500 GB is way too much now, but with the way technology is progressing, its only a matter of time before we think back and go 'wow I used to think 50GB was a lot'. I remember when I first started playing around computers, 33mhz was like WOW and it has a 50MB HDD?!? I remember the good ol 286, 386, and 486 processors lol

Kinda like some of the HD DVD supporters are saying why do we need 50gb on a BD when HD DVD can store more info with less space. IF HD DVD does win the war, it will be obselete in a couple years as bigger and better storage are needed. BD is the way to go

Very true! Possibly the PS4 will support the 500GB disks. I wonder what the format will be called? 3D-RAY, 3D-DVD???

It won't matter by then. BD (or HD DVD) is the last physical optical disc format, whatever's newer will just be downloadable.

Actually, for cutting edge news, 500gigs on a CD-Type disc isn't a lot. I remember two years ago, there was something called a M.O.D.S disk which I think stood for "Multi-Operational-Direcional-Stepping" disc.

It worked on the same principle as a DVD, except that the laser could read the same pit on a disc at 340 different angles and each "angle" the laser read the pit could yield a different information. All together, the disc could hold about 1,200 gigs of content (600gigs per side).

According to a related article on that same page, Holo - discs will be availible by fall, though it's price: $180 for each 600 GB write once disk, and $18,000 for drive. this device it aimed for big businesses such as Banks, Insurance Companies, etc..

Holo-Disc will only be practical as a Backup solution for extreamly large databases that must be archived for long periods of time.

As for Home Entertainment. Blu-ray is still in it's infancy. So Holo-Disk will not be around for a while. Blu-Ray is the one and only successor to DVD which has been around Since 1997. Seeing how strong DVD still is, at 2007.
I beilieve Blu-ray will have the same 10 year + life span.

It's highly likely that we will be in the same situaion in 2017, with two or more Disc technologies that are based off of holo-disc technology or somthing similar. UltraHD-DVD vs. BDHolo-Ray

Searched it. Does not exist. If you logically think about it How would it be posible to write to a disk like that. Every pit and fall on the disk are pressed or burned on a static physical 2D plane. It would be impossible to write multiple data that way, as the pits and falls will be the same no matter what angle you read it.

Holo-Disc uses two lasers to create a holographic image within the disk. this allows data to be stored on a 3d plane instead of 2D. Thus alowing more advanced allocation of data. The pits and fall are non existant.

that's why ignorance is bliss.

Sure, somewhen, we all need more...

but they´ve said in 3 years could a teraByte possible... so i guess that the 500Gb Disc won´t become capable...

Sorry, it's been a while since I read the article, so I got some of the terminology mixed up. Anyway, I found the old article:
